Random Friday afternoon activity - Spotify edition

Post by rass »

Find the artist with the greatest disparity in the number of plays of their most popular song and their next most popular song, looking at the latter as a percentage of the former.

The best/worst I've come up with so far is Skee-Lo. "I Wish" has 3,266,993 plays, while his next popular song (discounting various remixes and alternate versions of "I Wish") is "Superman" with 21,061 plays, or .64% of the plays of "I Wish".

To get the figures, just look up the artist and go to the Overview panel. There should be a list of the most popular songs (most often but not always sorted in descending order by the number of plays).

If you don't have Spotify, throw out a guess and I'll look up the figures.

Nice.

3,490,446 vs 4,550 ("Dance the Kung Fu") = .13%

If you go with a non-Kung Fu themed track, it's even worse (3,413 plays for "Time After Time", and most of those are probably confused Cyndi Lauper fans).

I'm thinking it's possible that someone who had a super hit might have a shot as much as someone who was a classic "one-hit wonder"

Robin Thicke is at 5% just because "Blurred Lines" has been played 150 million times.

It's perhaps not what I was going for since he isn't really a musician, but if Patrick Swayze wasn't (A) in The Fox and the Hound 2 and (B) part of an ensemble on the last track of the soundtrack, I would have had a 0% (instead of just .21%). 6.3+ million plays for "She's Like the Wind".

Everybody clap your hands.

Pretty confusing profile, with separate entries for Mr C The Slide Man and just Mr C, both with "Cha Cha Slide". Plus, the most popular version of "Cha Cha Slide" doesn't seem to be the one I usually hear at weddings.

I imagine the slide one will win but what about PSY? Worldwide that must have the most plays.

If Spotify were around in 1995 "Macarena" would be the runaway winner.

PSY had another song that followed that got some play, but not much staying power. The great K-Pop boom is over, except for Degen.

Gangnam Style was just another song in a bazillion K-Pop songs. I don't know why the West latched onto it at all. Or why they haven't latched onto another song since.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ko ... ne_singles" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Gangnam Style was 5 weeks at #1, 3 other songs have already beat with 6 weeks. The current song might become the first 7 week winner.
