This sure feels like it's going to PKs. This round, teams play super tight.

Knockout football is super tight yet we want more of it. Round of 32s in 2026!

I don't know if any of you caught The Captains (maybe just Captains) on Netflix, but it highlighted/chronicled the head guys on a variety of teams, including Modric and Thiago. As ugly as this game has been, it's still compelling to me, having gotten to know both of those guys a bit through the series.

Modric seems like a really good dude. Thiago... So much pressure on the Brazilian team, and exponentially so for the captain.

I’d love to see the stats on what percentage of extra times end up with one goal. With one team having scored and the other pressing, I feel like another goal is likely from someone.

I love smashing it right at the keepers head, especially if I'm an inexperienced penalty taker in a shootout.

The Lead podcast (The Athletic) today is about the psychology of penalty kicks by the way. Pretty fortuitous.

Apologies if I have missed this in the thread, but didn't Brazil beat Croatia involving a totally BS penalty at the 2014 world cup following play acting by Fred?

I love the way Brazil can play, but the cheating, throwing themselves all over the place has ruined it for me. You can't have it both ways with the dancing, happiness and togetherness, while at the same time being cheating, lying cunts.

Watching Neymar cry was schadenfreude, and almost as good at watching Luis Saurez cry, the cunt.

spoiler alert

If you watch this show, you'll see that the Croatian keeper got sat for the pivotal game against Russia during qualies after some shaky games leading up.

Modric gives him a pep talk, tells him he just needs to steady himself.

Pretty fucking cool to see him step up in PKs this tourney.

Damn work so I missed it but have seen a few episodes of Captains over the kids shoulder. Really good. Basically hard knocks for world cup qualifying. Follow about 4-6 different teams.

It's the way the Brazillian league is reffed that has ruined Brazilian players. That league is unwatchable because EVERYTHING is a foul.

I don't think Fred was in the squad then, though I do get him and Hulk confused for some reason.
