I felt the same way. But the more I look at the replay the more I think he, correctly, anticipated a deflection but incorrectly chose the wrong way it would go.

Hence his hesitation and being caught flat footed a bit. He got a hand on it! So he just seemed to misjudge it.

Yeah, the running the clock down to nothing to not give the other team the ball has gotten too extreme. FGs ok but not TDs.
Bellichick did this down 4 also against the Bengals and fumbled on the 2, never got the winning TD.

Mark Andrews damn near caught Hubbard on that fumble return, because nobody was blocking him. When somebody finally did, it was pretty close to a block in the back.
