Exactly, I was gonna use that exact phrase. "He should've done better" when a guy on the end of a 40 yard sprint misses a whipped in cross by 3 inches. Done better by what, turning into plastic man and extending his leg those extra 2 inches? It's so ubiquitous I don't even really hear it anymore.

My god, yes. I can't stand the ex player EPL color guys who talk like the rules of the game haven't changed since Vinnie Jones was allowed to roam free.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Fri Jan 27, 2023 10:09 am I grew to really REALLLY dislike him over the years. He was just relentlessly negative. It's something I've picked up on with a few other announcers across sports: They try to sound smart by cutting down the defense, when in many instances it was a great play by the person with the ball that should be highlighted.
Next time you're watching a PL match, listen to the color guy... A LOT of them do this.
Anyways, in the last 4-5 years of his career Packer made Final 4 games almost unwatchable. Contrast him with Rafferty if you want to really find the polar opposite.
Hate to shit on the guy in this context, but, honestly... He could've been less of an asshole, commenting on a bunch of young adults for a living. (And while he's not alone, sucking off college coaches constantly - who are all millionaires - and shitting on players sure didn't sit well with me.)
Until everything is less insane, I'm mixing weed with wine.
Re: Worthy of mention, too obscure for own thread
Packer was a negative-as-fuck elitist who enjoyed dumping on mid-majors, and yes he made the games unwatchable for several years.

Yeah, my overriding recollection of him was as a guy who always thought a sixth place major conference team was more deserving to be in the tournament than any mid-major conference champ.

Re: Worthy of mention, too obscure for own thread
Oh yeah...who can forget about him shitting all over mid-majors and George Mason when they went to the Final Four, or calling Allen Iverson a "tough monkey" or when he told two female Duke students who asked to see his press pass before letting him into Cameron Indoor: "You need to get a life. Since when do we let women control who gets into a men's basketball game? Why don't you go find a women's game to let people into?' " (he did apologize for that).
That said...it was great when NBC had the tourney and the lead broadcast team was Al McGuire, Packer, and Dick Enberg. That was high quality stuff.

I had never heard of Television or Marquee Moon until a coworker introduced me to that album (on CD!) about 15 or so years ago. I was blown away, not only by how much I liked it, but by the fact that I hadn't heard of them before. Still love that album.
Totally Kafkaesque
Re: Worthy of mention, too obscure for own thread
He and Richard Lloyd really complemented each other’s guitar playing.
And FWIW, Lloyd and Robert Quine provided the sonic guitar playing on Matthew Sweet’s Girlfriend.
And this is Tom Verlaine playing on Luna’s track, “23 Minutes in Brussels” (if you didn’t know it, you’ll recognize it instantly and then never forget it):

In my mind, Lou Reed's best era was when Robert Quine was in his band. Saw them in concert and it was one of the most intense shows I have ever seen.

I knew he was a lousy husband, but this quote sent me to do some reading about him, and my god - what a complete piece of shit.
Not surprisingly, a few of my (Canadian) Facebook friends have posted "tribute to a legend" sort of posts.

Re: Worthy of mention, too obscure for own thread
I knew he was Brett Hull's father and a star in his day. That's about all I know about him.
ETA: Ok, physically abusing multiple wives, long history of racism and quoted by a journalist as saying "Hitler had some good ideas, but took things a little too far." Hull said he was misquoted and sued the paper for defamation. One clip said the Canadian skit comedy show This Hour Has 22 Minutes (loved that show in college) did a segment where he said Darryl Sittler had good ideas. Can't find the clip.

I thought this was a funny comment on that:The Sybian wrote: ↑Mon Jan 30, 2023 3:53 pm quoted by a journalist as saying. "Hitler had some good ideas, but took things a little too far." Hull said he was misquoted and sued the paper for defamation.
Defector wrote:...Hull would sue the paper for defamation, as well as others that reprinted the comments, with his lawyer declaring that "it's not just what he said but the way in which he said it; that his demeanor, tone of voice, facial expression communicated nothing but contempt and hatred for Adolf Hitler." I must admit that I am stretching my brain to imagine the facial expressions that would exonerate that quote, and coming up empty.

When asked to clarify, Hull said he was down with everything Hitler did except invading France, that took it too far.sancarlos wrote: ↑Mon Jan 30, 2023 5:08 pmI thought this was a funny comment on that:The Sybian wrote: ↑Mon Jan 30, 2023 3:53 pm quoted by a journalist as saying. Never had the persona to make him a megastar like his brother, but was a really good athletic in-ring performer. And the Genius heel gimmick was underrated. RIP.

Died almost a month ago, just announced. Ralphie’s mom, among other roles. Her being naked in Slap Shot was scarring.

Also died almost a month ago, with news coming out yesterday, Charles Kimbrough, 86. Most known as Jim Dial on Murphy Brown, also voiced Victor in Hunchback of Notre Dame.
