Well, to state the obvious, the vast majority of Newfies are of Irish heritage. Probably English, too. But definitely Irish.

So, yeah.

related aside: ages ago when i lived outside Boston I was friends w a group of Newfies who all came down together to work at a tech company in Cambridge. Awesome group of guys - went to a few Hip concerts together and played a shittonne of fairly serious summer road hockey. I don't *know* that they were alcoholics ... but I've never been around a bunch of ppl who could down a <ahem> two-four in an hour and *need* to get more. Terrifying and impressive all at once. This was during games.

It just looks amazing.

Oh yeah, absolutely stunning. Having vacationed in Maine a number of times, Newfoundland has been on our radar for years. It's a bit of a haul, but I'm told it's worth it.

Random stuff:

1) Having spent time with friends and family from Ontario, I was made aware that ppl from Newfoundland are called Newfies and are, um... Thought of as kind of dumb/backwards.

2) One of my favorite bands back in the day was Great Big Sea, who are from Newfoundland. Lots of fun. Kind of an Irish, sea shanty on steroids type of deal.

Looked it up on Wiki, couple of things:

1) 97 percent of Newfoundland's population speaks English, making it the most homolingual province in Canada.

2) It is known as the most Irish place outside of Ireland.

'bengal, check this interesting tie into MD:

The founding proprietor of the Province of Avalon, George Calvert, 1st Baron Baltimore, intended that it should serve as a refuge for his persecuted Roman Catholic co-religionists. But like his other colony in the Province of Maryland on the American mainland, it soon passed out of the Calvert family's control. The majority Catholic population that developed, thanks to Irish immigration, in St. John's and the Avalon Peninsula, was subjected to same disabilities that applied elsewhere under the British Crown. On visiting St. John's in 1786, Prince William Henry (the future King William IV) noted that "there are ten Roman Catholics to one Protestant",[69] and he counselled against any measure of Catholic relief.[70]

Many years ago, I came into work and noticed that my pants had somehow turned into "floods." I told my co-worker that my pants must've shrunk.

Her: "You ever consider you've put on some weight?"

Just sayin' AB.

I would guess that having solid wifi limits complaints about other things.

I would pay good money to see AB try to cross his legs in any size airplane seat. Unless he's double-jointed, ain't gonna happen.

Sharon Stone, Kelly Kapowski, and BOTH Plinys? You are living the motherfucking dream!!!

*Sidenote that maybe only Rush cares about, I just bought the ingredients to brew a Pliny the Elder clone. The amount of hops is astounding, including two syringes of hop extract.

Found the younger at a very good pizza place in Boulder.

The distributor for Russian River posted a list this year of all the locations that would have it…some required advanced sign ups or tickets.

The Boulder pizza place you are talking about must be Backcountry?

As far as bereavement airfares it might as well be a myth…last time I checked it was like 5% off. And required documentation!

Saw a dude that definitely wasn't Gary Busey because he looked too much like Gary Busey. And when he turned the profile was wrong.

And if we find out that Kenneth Branagh was in Santa Monica today, then I saw him, too.
