We live really close to the oldest's junior high and every single time I hear sirens, I'm convinced they're headed there. It's fun.

but aren't those people already making an entire movement out of being victims and only escalating it?
(i mean, i hear you. but it can't change ever. only getting rid of the guns will and HAHAHAHA right.)
i'm always terrified - after the Buffalo shooting last year anytime I'm in Tops (that's the chain where it happened) I see armed guards and I am definitely feeling paranoid - and now with another kid about to go to university it just adds another level. fk

Re: Guns: Infinity
You can't get rid of what's out there, but you can criminalize having one in public, you can stop new (legal) sales, you can make bullet production illegal, etc. Its never going to be good like a normal country, but it doesn't have to be perpetually escalating. And the only path I see to de-escalation is the people who are currently blocking any legislation to feel they need legislation to protect themselves and theirs.MaxWebster wrote: ↑Tue Feb 14, 2023 10:38 ambut aren't those people already making an entire movement out of being victims and only escalating it?

Hypothetically, the way you discourage future Kyle Rittenhouse's is by not having Kyle Rittenhouse around to pose for dickhead pictures.

on the perhaps naive hopes that that is real...
that's how it has to happen. fucking pussy democrats have to stop worrying about fking feelings - people who will be angry at the words aren't people that can be reached. no more compromises - none. fking ban them.
it has just NEVER happened. ever.
i don't know why this one is hitting me harder than ALL 9831 (est) OTHERS but goddamn.

CU has had shelter-in-place warnings 2 of 3 days this week, woo hoo! (though the one a few days ago was just an idiot drug dealer.)
Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

Re: Guns: Infinity
Yes he will. But also remember that they are still a small minority, and we're just never going to change their minds. The potential voters in the middle, the ones who might or might not vote anyway, those are the ones we would have to capture, and the ChuckleFuck in question isn't going to get their votes if we go on the attack.MaxWebster wrote: ↑Fri Mar 03, 2023 12:56 pm holy shit.
and yet this fucking cnt will probably get more votes from his "base."
I'm going to go back to the well again by saying we need to put the far-right on the defensive. With guns, here's a new tack. Half the deaths by guns in America, half of the brains that go dark when a round enters the body are attached to the same finger that pulled the trigger. Suicide is half the gun deaths in America.
We can try and sit there and argue the semantics of the Second Amendment or background checks or what have you. Another way is to simply paint them as pro-suicide. Let them try and defend that. And the counter that people would simply try another way, point out that people choose guns because it's really fucking effective. If suicide is viewed as a primarily rash decision, the line that it's a permanent solution to a temporary problem, ChuckleFuck wants to make it easier for those people to die. Let them try and come up with an argument, and then paint them that they don't have any solutions except put more guns out there.

Re: Guns: Infinity
I would add to that mix veteran soldier suicides.
You can lead a horse to fish, but you can't fish out a horse.
Re: Guns: Infinity
Yeah, just suicide and I think you get a lot of "they'd just do it another way". Tie in veteran suicides and underfunding their healthcare and maybe you get somewhere a little quicker.
Re: Guns: Infinity
I think you're missing the point. It's not to put out suicide to debate the merits. It's to point out and label them.
Think of the abortion debate. The right carved out "pro-life" and then forced their opponents to play defense. Even if the vast, vast majority of the pro-life movement couldn't give any less of a fuck about the baby once its born, they were able to label themselves.
Do you like the way they made "Woke" a bad word? We know it's bullshit. Woke simply means to not be such a racist, sexist asshole all the time. No wonder the Right is against it.
The gun debate doesn't seem to be a debate that has that label attached to either side yet. Start painting them as pro-suicide, and it forces them to defend the attack instead of raising support for their own arguments. That's the game they've been playing for decades. Do it right back.

Re: Guns: Infinity
I get what you're saying, I just don't think that path works because (1) there's a loophole and (2) its very hard to shame the shameless. Its too easy to spin out of. Treatment of veterans is one of those topics that should be front and center at all times and this would be a way to link guns in, not vice versa.
Re: Guns: Infinity
Damn, inject that into my veins. Kudos. I guess, to that idiot for going on the show and not throwing a fit as Jon interrupted him and beat him up, but man ... I'd love to know what was going on in his head as he knew he was being exposed. I'm shocked he didn't stand up and walk out like the coward he is.
(meant that for the Stewart video, not the subsequent suicide posts I hadn't seen yet)

LJam (btw that's giving away my nickname for you. who has time for the full formality):
I couldn't agree more. The time for compromise and being nice and trying to bridge the gap ended decades ago when these monsters controlled the narratives. Woke is .... i mean, i cannot believe how quickly that fucking happened. I really feel like i'm living in a terrible non-believable movie when politicians have banners printed that say "anti-woke" - ???? woke now can mean anything - it has literally meant putting child-care support in bills - oh that's woke now. Say that word and BZZZZ - gets that right-wing trigger going.
to be honest - i've never felt so close to the edge (5 star Yes album right there) as I do these days. It's not a good place to be. We're about to be empty nesters with 2 awesome girls in college and i'm proud as fk but also even more terrified. I literally tell them "move away from this country if and when you can" and they know it, they know why, they agree, but of course i'm proof that it's easier said than done.
Anyways.... blahblah I appreciate and *need* the kinds of rational thinking I read from you guys here, so thank you.
(that was kind of a meta-post/confessions there - sorry)

Re: Guns: Infinity
I've maintained in private conversations that Republicans profit when Americans die. Children. Veterans. Spouses. The average everyday person. Every person tied to gun violence is another dollar sign for the NRA.
That same NRA is nothing more than a Russian money funnel. Therefore Russians win because they drive us apart using our own 'shall not be infringed' rhetoric against us.
If only the Democrats bottled that energy and sold it appropriately it might start to affect change somewhere -- if only a little bit. Instead, Democrats would rather the victims of gun violence fight the fight for them. Much easier they way.

When we stopped for a late dinner at a Dennys in middle of nowhere Utah this summer there was a guy packing. But he also had baby wipes in his hand so the wife and kids felt a bit better.

Yet another school shooting, this one with children among the fatalities. Democrats are such absolute fucking pussies to not take a shut-it-all-down level stand here.
Re: Guns: Infinity
Well since it's a female shooter it's an outlier and what can really be done with something like that that no one could see coming? ![🤷](//cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/twitter/twemoji@latest/assets/svg/1f937.svg)

I'll quote Yeats here...
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
