Conservative or Otherwise Puritanical Hot Takes

Post by Jerloma »

You ever get caught up on an idea that makes you loathe yourself a little because it sounds like something Ben Shapiro would endorse? Let's hear 'em!

After just watching three consecutive high school movies, it occurred to me that like 90% of every Hollywood production about high school goes out of their way to promote the idea that there's something wrong with you if you're a virgin in high school. This isn't just a now thing...I'm talking for my entire life. I don't know what high school was like for you guys, but literally not one person ever asked me or cared whether or not I'd done the sex. Just wasn't a thing.

Also, given that these are almost always adults producing these movies, pushing that narrative not only feels disingenuous, but fucking creepy. Like super-duper fucking creepy!

So there you go. Shalom or whatever.

That's a good one.

90% of graffiti art is vandalism.

In Toronto, there are a few areas where artists are encouraged to go crazy, and they are pretty cool. But as for the run of the mill street "tagging?" Go practice your signature elsewhere you hoodlum.

I find talk about drug-aided experiences exceedingly boring, and I automatically assume people who do powder cocaine as people I never want to have in my life in any capacity.

I'm as liberal as the next guy...and I have a lot of empathy for homeless people...but goddamn the piles of garbage and homeless encampments piss me off. Seattle used to be a clean city...but not no more. And its my city too! I shouldn't have to look at huge piles of debris everywhere.

Listen squeegee kid, I get it, you want to make a few bucks. And if I carried any cash, I’d have given you a few bucks NOT to wash my window at the stop light. I even told you “don’t do it, no thanks”. But you washed it and then slammed your hand on my hood when I told you I didn’t have any cash. I’m not saying it was right, but I understand why people get out of their cars and swing bats at you.

Facial tattoos implicitly say “yes, Your Honor. I would like the maximum sentence, in solitary if possible.”

Probably belongs in the military thread, but yea. So dumb.

But that's what you have to do to soak to a generation that doesn't want to serve in the military.

(And beards still aren't legal, btw. Got everyone in a tizzy, especially after the comments from the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Joint Chiefs.)

I call my GF my "partner" a lot...but we're 60-ish and have been together for over 10 years now, so "GirlFriend" doesn't seem right.

J lo, your OP is a REALLY good point. I'm not saying it wasn't an issue or wasn't discussed, but at least with my high school friends, you kind of knew, but it was never something we shamed anyone about.

No. Because people who speak Spanish know that the langauge is entirely based on masculine and feminine uses of words so they don’t see any reason for Latinx. Source: spoke to a Hispanic man and woman about this recently.

I took a lot of Spanish in middle/high school. That line of thinking is why I never understood the Latinx thing.

Like, Costa Rico has to be Costx Ricx.

I'm amazed at how long this stupid trend has lasted. I guess when it's a few decades in, it's not really a trend anymore. I still don't get it though.

I got a couple:

I simply couldn't care less about what Greta Thunberg has to say.

Her telling me about climate change holds the same level of merit as a twenty-something on Instagram/TikTok giving me or the person scrolling life advice about "getting after it" and "following your goals." And hey, maybe I'm not the demographic for her and that's fine, but the media love she receives is nauseating to the point where I roll my eyes.

Now take this from a dude who knew about divorce from a very young age and just finished watching Marriage Story, when, in general, women get so, so much from a divorce and win most of them, I don't feel so bad about a wage gap. This is a broad brush stroke comment, of course. I want women to be paid the same as men for the same job. I hope that there are women who want men to not be taken to the cleaners if a divorce happens.

I mean, the initial post said "like something Ben Shapiro would endorse."

Do I feel bad about having this opinion? For sure. And are the 2 topics even remotely related? Nope.

But in the offhand chance there's a person who both wants a fair wage AND a lot in the divorce, I don't feel bad for that person.
