Re: Getting the spins
The best country song ever? Pretty subjective, but I’m not a huge fan of the syrup-smooth Billy Sherrill-style country. And, I actively dislike the pop/bro country of recent vintage. I can't pick just one song, but for me, it is definitely among these songs (I'm listing artist, not songwriter):
Hank Williams Sr. - I'm so lonesome I could cry (or, maybe Hey, Good Lookin'/Your Cheatin' Heart)
Johnny Cash - I walk the line (or, maybe Ring of Fire/Sunday Morning Comin' Down/Folsom Prison Blues)
Loretta Lynn - Coal Miner's Daughter (or maybe Fist City)
Dolly Parton - Jolene
Patsy Cline - Walkin' After Midnight/Crazy/I Fall to Pieces
Charlie Pride - Kiss an Angel Good Morning
Merle Haggard - Mama Tried/Fightin' Side of Me
Buck Owens - Tiger by the Tail/Act Naturally
Tammy Wynette - Stand By Your Man
George Jones - White Lightnin'/He Stopped Loving Her Today/Revenooer Man
Willie Nelson - Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain/Whisky River
Fuck it. I'm going with Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain.

Re: Getting the spins
That's a good list. But that you put the song in question up there on your list says it's at least arguable. I saw that Rolling stone had it in 4th, so that's still in the argument range as well.
Hold on, I'm trying to see if Jack London ever gets this fire built or not.
Re: Getting the spins
I'm sure most of you know I'm not a huge country music guy, but this song transcends genre and should be in the conversation.

The new Lucero album is great, maybe their best since Women & Work.
“Nothing’s Alright” deserves a place up there with “Nights Like These”, “Sweet Little Thing” and “That Much Further West”

Lucifer on the Sofa is such a great album.

1. Brian, good call on Spotify's AI. I'm loving it. Now you can mock me for what I write next.
2. I listened to the 2 and a half hours of U2 Songs of Surrender. Most of the time, I thought this was an unnecessary project and it's disconcerting to hear song I obsessed over being completely reworked. Also, it's mostly Edge/Bono, so you get to hear stripped down versions of songs which is good, but I'd rather hear the entire band (I feel the same way when I listen to Dave Matthews/Tim Reynolds too much). Other thoughts:
-The Edge did create some cool musical moments, but for the first listen, the awkwardness outnumbered the highlights. A producer cutting a lot would have helped.
-Bono goes back and forth from having good vocal moments to having cringe worthy SNL lounge singer moments.
-I do not like updated lyrics
-The stripped back songs highlights the songwriting so you can easily see how Bono's song writing used to be so much better.
-The original Walk On was dedicated to someone who turned out to be problematic so Bono reworked the lyrics to make it about Ukraine (see above note about updated lyrics).
-U2 has 2 albums ready to be released, which from interviews, sounds much more interesting than this release, but they don't want to release them until Larry Mullen, Jr. is able to tour.
Tiny Desk with the new Walk On version. The Edge is still awesome.

Ohio man in Florida
Reading the story I thought it was a typo that Allen is only 59 but he joined DL in 1978 on his 15th birthday!
I felt aswirl with warm secretions.

Did he have to fight them off himself. Hopefully someone gave him a hand.

You can tell Allen isn’t a native Floridian because he was unarmed

Re: Getting the spins
The SNL Behind the Music spoof of them was so funny. Horatio Sanz drumming with both hands, but one arm inside his shirt is probably a personal top 10 moment on that show.

Fucking hell, a new Jenny Lewis record too? I can't handle all of this new music.

Friday is a pretty great release day: THS, boygenius, and The New Pornographers.

Re: Getting the spins
Boygenius is really good timing. We have a 3 hour drive the next day and a certain dad is working hard to get them into rotation with a certain 11.5 year old.

She's liked some in the past but the real roadblock is, naturally, she'd rather listen to what her friends are at any given time. Might have to work with her group as a whole. Kids like that, right?

Peter Gabriel is so great. Put both Secret World Live and So on recently and they completely hold up. Really want to see him on this summer/fall tour but he comes nowhere near Florida and I'm pretty sure my travel card is full.

Us is amazing as well, but yeah, So is 100% certified fresh. I saw the Secret World tour live in 1992 or 1993 and they put on a hell of a show.DaveInSeattle wrote: ↑Tue Jun 06, 2023 5:26 pmWe've got our tickets for October here in Seattle.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Tue Jun 06, 2023 4:17 pm Peter Gabriel is so great. Re: Getting the spins
Today did not disappoint. The new Isbell is fantastic as well as the new Janelle Monae and Jenny Lewis.
Also, got a chuckle when updating my music list. These two were added to my playlist back-to-back.

The one in Orlando? I was at that show. He brought out the first responders who helped save the lives of some of his road crew on a crash they had suffered on (I think) I-75 South.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Tue Jun 06, 2023 8:19 pmUs is amazing as well, but yeah, So is 100% certified fresh. Re: Getting the spins
I was excited to see that Monae was going to be playing here live in the fall....until I saw that she's playing at the absolute worst venue in Seattle. The WaMu theater. All the ambience of an airport loading dock. And it should tell you how shitty it is by the fact that its still named after a bank that went out of business 15 years ago.

Re: Getting the spins
One of my all time favourite bands.
And this, this is amazing! "If There Is Something" is a work of art.
Canadian International
Re: Getting the spins
It really is! One of my what-ifs of course is whether or not Eno stuck with Roxy Music and Brian Ferry didn't get blue-eyed-soul-fever later in the 70s.
They pushed further than Bowie did. But Bowie was Ziggy.
Man I loved that band.

I’m enjoying the new Jason Isbell. He is playing at Stanford later this month (15 minutes from my home), but I’ll be out of town that day. Dammit.

Great song. I’ve spun it 3-4 times now and it’s great but I think not my favorite album for sure.
Hold on, I'm trying to see if Jack London ever gets this fire built or not.
Re: Getting the spins
Put me in the camp of folks who really like the new Jason Isbell album. I wouldn't necessarily say it's his best album, but it's certainly close. The song King of Oklahoma reminds me a lot of Bruce Springsteen. It would fit right in on Nebraska.
Totally Kafkaesque
