Anyway, here's a good site for smoke forecasts.

Here's another one I've used: https://rapidrefresh.noaa.gov/hrrr/HRRRsmoke/

There was a Twitter bot that published an updated smoke forecast every hour, but that one shut down a few months ago.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

You know, Fox News could just ignore it instead of reporting the lies which would ultimately kill their customers, right?

Let them continue the lies. The sooner their base dies the better off we all are.

That orange haze is exactly what a sandstorm looked like in the desert when I was deployed there.

Well, the other issue is that rising temperatures are feeding these at an increasing rate. Forest fires are natural... totally get that. But not at this rate and duration.

ETA - I should add, driving through CO, SD, WY and UT the last month... You can see where they are making efforts to mitigate these fires by clearing and stacking undergrowth, particularly in the state/national parks. In the Black Hills, especially, there were hundreds and hundreds of stacks throughout that park. It's very close to Wind Cave NP and a decent chunk of that place was charred wood.

Everyone here knows this, but rising temperatures dry out both the potential kindling on the ground, and the trees themselves, making both more susceptible to burning. That’s just Firemaking 101. Anyone who’s ever seen a single episode of Survivor understands that.

And no, I’m not in any way directing this at anyone here. We all know this. I just wanted to point this out so if you guys need a rebuttal for climate change-deniers/fossil fuel stooges.

Kind of like the "Man's Best Friend Thread." this thread only focusses on the bad stuff.

We have had absolutely spectacular weather here since the smoke cleared out 10 days ago. Mid 70's with no humidity and mid 50's for sleeping.

Working from home, but my office building is in this video. Very near the tornado. No reports of major damage, mostly signs and trees down.

it's brutal - actually woke me up at ~3am. Did one of those 2/3 asleep stagger-around-the-house moves making sure nothing was on fire.

i've had all the windows shut here all day just because it's so awful.

It was actually pleasant on the beach as well as in the shade by the pool. I haven't been to a Texas beach in a few years and I forgot how much the breeze helps.

Poured overnight (or early AM) here last night, but no storms, I think. No watches are in effect for our immediate area but there are tornado watches in the southern part of the state. Was pretty nice earlier, actually.

I’m under a tornado watch until 11 pm. I just moved the tomato garden and about to bring up the cat carrier just in case. The Weather Channel app looks like the worst of it rolling through between 8 and 9:30 tonight.

What’s the worst case scenario? We got a hatchback in our garage but there’s another unit directly above us. The dinner table is only a four-seater.

Oldest's car died yesterday and they are still waiting for the tow to get it and yeah, they are expecting huge winds in about 30 minutes. These are some of the hard parts with the kids not living closely. I'm nearly totally helpless other than making suggestions.

And just heard that they said they aren't gonna come get it. So instead of telling us that this morning when they said they'd tow it or at least calling at some point, they waited for her to call, confirmed they were coming to get it, and then just said they won't make it when they missed their second window for pickiup.

So they lost a full day of work waiting for a fucking tow truck.

INdoor bathroom or closet as far as you can get from exterior walls if shit starts flying. Hoping it doesn't get too bad is also acceptable.

That same weather system is supposed to hit her around 6:15. Spent a good chunk of the afternoon taking down exterior lights and the umbrella in the back yard, putting up some mulch bags to divert water away from the patio, checking the down spouts.

Went and got gas to fill up one of the cars (other one already full) and made sure before a recent storm a few weeks ago that we have plenty of propane for the grill.

Wife already has dinner cooked, so, just wait and see at this point.

Rains from Hurricane Hilary expected to start hitting California and southern NV tomorrow and it could be catastrophic. Some models are showing it as a 500-year event where we could get twice as much rain in one day as we usually get in a year. If that happens….

Projections have it basically hitting the entire coast from the border of Mexico up through LA County as far north as Santa Monica and Malibu.

Was just talking to a friend who lives in West Hollywood where they should be getting about 2.5" of rain (probably 12 miles from the coast).
