Also if you just swipe up on a photo in your camera roll (iPhone) it gives you the option to ID the plant/animal. Seems to work pretty well but not sure how it compares to Merlin / Seek. (My father is an ecologist and loves Seek fwiw.)

I got super nerdy using Seek on the desert flowers I was finding in the parks in Utah. Grape Soda Lupine was probably the coolest name.

I wanted to ask what flowers were out down there but figured it’d be too nerdy.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Mon May 15, 2023 12:21 pm I got super nerdy using Seek on the desert flowers I was finding in the parks in Utah. Grape Soda Lupine was probably the coolest name.

There were a TON... I guess it's been kind of rainy or something?
The Pale Evening Primrose was a close second to the Utah Beardtongue. Wholly Locoweed was pretty ubiquitous. Lots of variants of Paintbrushes, which were some variant of bright red.

Awesome. I finally have a little bit of a break in my schedule, so we're doing a day trip to Buckhorn Wash and the Wedge Overlook tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing what's blooming down there.

Just got an invite to a FB group dedicated to my 30th HS reunion and somehow hadn't done that bit of arithmetic yet this year.
I felt aswirl with warm secretions.

Yes.
Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

You legitimately don't even have to be 50 to roll your eyes at that and go "What the fuck?"

Fortunately or unfortunately I know who Livvy Dunne is (OMG, MY VUORI JOGGERS ARE THE BEST PANTS EVER) and the term 'rizz' because my buddy is a parent to teenagers. (Plus Hasan Piker talked about it on a recent PSA episode -- coincidentally in the context of DeSantis!)

Re: Random thoughts/images/shit that makes you feel old thread
I keep reading this and it gets funnier every time. I’d love to play a game of a real headline and a fake one from Damien Owens and I have to guess which one is real.
My kids use rizz, so I knew that. I’ve heard of Olivia Dunne, but didn’t connect her to Livvy. Never heard of baby Gronk. Just showed my 16yo son the headline. He didn’t understand it, but said Baby Gronk is an 8 yo football player. I feel like I should be disappointed in him for not knowing who Olivia Dunne is.

Showed the 14yo the headline and asked if she understood. Got a condescending look, an eyeroll, and a complete explanation, although she didn't know Baby Gronk actually met Livvy.

Have fun with that. But the good news is, she’ll actually start thinking you’re a bit smarter when she gets into her 20s. Yikes!
Went out for coffee with a buddy this afternoon and we were reminiscing about our time at University in Montreal and how we saw Guy Lafleur and a team of hall of famers play on a regular basis.

I still think of radio hosts whenever I hear or see the term "DJ"
(This is my 3rd consecutive post on this thread. Clearly I am feeling very old these days. Probably started when the cashier at the store gave me the senior's discount without asking my age.
He’s 36 and has been arrested (maybe imprisoned?) for threats against female DJs.

Wait. What’s a DJ if not a radio host?

Ok, so folks playing music for clubs or parties? That makes sense. From your description I thought maybe DJ had some totally new meaning.

FWIW, I was aware of DJs being used for people at parties, bars, bar mitzvahs, etc. I was thinking that there was some new meaning.
Hell, I remember High Fidelity, and that movie's 23 years old.

Watched the 5th grade graduation and me and the rest of the afterschool admins were shocked at how badly the 5th graders were in front of their parents. Among other things, during the diploma handout, a few students did the fake handshake then brush your hair thingsto the principal. After, we blamed a young 5th grade teacher who tencourages entitlement and ries too hard to be cool and basically encourages this behavior... and that's when it hit me that I'm now the grumpy old educator complaining about shitty new generation of young teachers.
Re: Random thoughts/images/shit that makes you feel old thread
Why would we expect 10 and 11 year olds to behave with any level of decorum? They’re kids. More to the point, WTF is an elementary school graduation ceremony all about, anyway?EdRomero wrote: ↑Mon Jun 26, 2023 1:55 pm Watched the 5th grade graduation and me and the rest of the afterschool admins were shocked at how badly the 5th graders were in front of their parents. Re: Random thoughts/images/shit that makes you feel old thread
Our school district does a ceremony for elementary school and a bigger ceremony for middle school that was equivalent to my high school ceremony. They do a cool thing for the elementary schools, as the ceremony is during school. At the end, the graduating 5th graders walk out the halls of the school and the younger grades line the halls and clap them out, while the parents line up by the front door and sidewalk and clap them out. Lots of tears for that one. Except the kids, they are over it.EnochRoot wrote: ↑Mon Jun 26, 2023 2:11 pmWhy would we expect 10 and 11 year olds to behave with any level of decorum? They’re kids. I'm 44 and I had an elementary school graduation ceremony complete with Pomp and Circumstance playing (which was my realization that it wasn't just Macho Man's theme music.)

Wow. I'm 52. In Glastonbury, CT we didn't do anything for Elementary School. Nothing for Junior High, either. I moved to FL my freshman year in HS, and yeah obviously we had a graduation ceremony at the local arena.
I guess I can ask my mom if we had a graduation ceremony for Elementary School. I really don't think so though.
What, did they wear little caps and gowns?
