Johnnie wrote: Mon Jun 05, 2023 3:53 pm To be fair, my experience when discovering older music was really only from my parents. Dad was a huge Roy Orbison fan and my mom loved Cher and Madonna. And they'd listen to what we'd refer to as yacht rock now on the radio. I grew up loving hip hop and really never detracted from it.

So when it came to rock/metal/other music for me I would have to hear it in the background of a movie or TV show unless it was so ubiquitous it was heard outside of those avenues. (Like Queen at sporting events.)

I can't really put an artist to a certain song on some of the stuff I hear now because of it. So I can understand the "new" song I just heard even though it's really old.

Honestly, I had never heard Immigrant Song until that one scene in Baby Driver. (I think it was in that movie.) And when I Shazam'd it found out it was Led Zeppelin and released originally in 1970. I felt kinda sheltered when I found that out.

I grew up with my mom and dad's record collections as my guideposts until I was around 12 or so and MTV kicked off and my friends got into Ozzy Osbourne and a bunch of other metal bands. Then I met a new group of friends who were deeply into the emerging rap and techno scenes and my own tastes took off from there.

In the 90s, after college, I gravitated to KEXP and Sub Pop and the dying days of DC-based WHFS for my musical pointers. At some point, not sure why/how, I just stopped seeking anything new out. It's not like I'll turn good "new" stuff away, by any stretch. Like, my love of the Avett Bros came well after I'd my active days, for example.

But it's gotta be pretty impressive to grab my attention these days.

I assume I listen to more "new" stuff than most people in my demo and I'm still like 80% or more albums that are a decade old if its not KEXP streaming.

There's plain and sparkling and now flavored options like Armless Palmer which is their Arnold Palmer. I love the unflavored sparkling. Really good level of carbonation.

Ever see Zephyrhills bottled water when in Florida? It's our Poland Spring or whatever equivalent local spring water. Zephyrhills is about 30-40 minutes north of Tampa and most around here pronounce it as Zeff-ra-hills.

Fungible is a good one. I told Nicole to use it when talking to one of her old bosses and he somehow didn't know what it meant, and that slight air of superiority truly helps in a discussion like that.

Defenestration is probably top 3 for me.

You know you've got a great historical record when there is a second defenestration of Prague.

mister d wrote: Fri Nov 18, 2022 10:32 amPretty great. Quick 1:15 set was just the right length and, except for when the (drug using!) guy in front was leaning too far one way or the other, she had clear sightlines. Got a cool t-shirt and a pic in front of the SOLD OUT sign out front and I learned Liquid Death is just water.

Antidisestablishmentarianism.

It's just such a pretentious looking word. But it's my favorite.

Also, The Press Box podcast on the Ringer has been on a rant about the recent usage of 'defenestrate' because whatever it's referencing is not being thrown out of the window.

Favorite word to see: Bookkeeper (because of the three consecutive double letters)
Favorite word trivia: Facetious and Abstemious (only words with all five vowels just once and in alphabetical order)
