Interesting now. 5th day of the 1st test. Australia need 117 and England needs 5 wickets. 46 overs left so probably 50/50 who wins.

Tea. Australia needs 98 runs, England needs 5 wickets.

Did England declare at 393 in their first inning(s)? Was that a reasonable move at the time?
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Wicket! Australia needs 89 to win. Four wickets left.

Australia got 48 in their first innings after the sixth wicket. England got 77 in their second innings after 6.

Drama.

To win yes. They could have kept batting and killed more time into Day 2 which would probably result in a draw. There are always risks with declarations and Stokes has been known to captain to win. Also they wanted Broad and company throwing 30 fastballs at the surprised and unprepared Aussies late in the day in bad light.

I thought England had it when they got the 8th wicket. But it looks like that's all they're going to get.

It was an unbelievable day of cricket. Honestly Stokes’ knock deserved more, but once he went the tail unraveled quickly.

Another really interesting day in what is turning into an incredible Ashes. Honestly, it could be 3-0 for either side at this point. England absolutely mashed the gas for about five hours today, and Crawley nearly got a double ton at over a run a ball. Question now is when do England declare? To have a chance of getting the Ashes back they HAVE to win, but the weather forecast for the weekend is shit. Would be a shame for the aussies to retain the ashes with a weather draw at this point, so I’d like to see England bat like mad for about thirty minutes and then try to get ten. Wicket looked much more unpredictable the last part of the day, so there are strange bounces a plenty coming.

The reason England are scoring so quickly is because they know the weather forecast is horrible. As a test match is played over 5 days and the first three matches have been resolved within 3 days (when taking weather into account), so hopefully all is good. The Aussies have picked a fairly defensive team and likely are playing the weather, knowing this the English have been smashing the ball all over the shop...

For sure they needed to be aggressive today, but the English have been scoring runs at high rates since baz took over, not just today. It’s simplistic to say bazball is just about scoring fast, but it’s primarily about playing without fear.

I’d also argue that the aussies picked an offensive team, not a defensive one. They dropped spin and added two allrounders to strengthen the tail after Lords.

They strengthened the tail to bat for longer, not to make this competitive. The best way to keep the opposition from scoring is by batting for a long time. The longer they bat, the less time England have to score with the weather closing in. Also, as mentioned by Baloney, Lyons would have played and bowled a lot if available, he would have also got through his overs quickly. Australia's bowling rate has been so slow during this series, this is because there is no Lyons and they do not want to bowl quickly.

Well that was a fun last wicket partnership, tough to be left stranded on 99 not out.

Wonder when Cummins last had figures of 1-129

Cummins looked knackered and pretty annoyed at the end of England's innings today. All three top Aussie bowlers gave up 120+ runs, which has never happened before to them.

May have a chance of defending that on an English wicket, I doubt they could have defended 350 today.
