Yes, it is stupid to dump the prestige associated with HBO, but, at the same time, if they kept it on and used it to advertise all the crap shows, they'd just be poisoning the well.
Does writing that joke count as crossing the picket line?

I didn’t realize this new Max thing made HBOMax end. Went to watch Succession last night and got a screen saying HBOMax is not yet available in my region. WTF is my dad paying for if I can’t watch it anymore?

My apps all updated automatically on my Roku players. It was still HBO Max on my phone yesterday but now I have to download the new app there. ETA: Thanks gents, it worked! Took 20 minutes to figure out logging in through their cable provider on my phone and getting the password correct. Hopefully it'll be easier on the TV.

Bunch of mini-protests in town at the HS (some show was filming or was supposed to be filming there) and at a house by some Frank Lloyd Wright understudy that I guess is in some shows. I imagine its local creatives who would rather protest from home than go into the city?

Re: The 2023-? Writers Guild of America strike
My first job writing for TV was on a comedy/game show up here that ran for a couple of seasons. The company said that they couldn't pay as Guild scale, so they couldn't bill us as writers. Instead, we were credited as "Creative Guys"
(The Creative Producer on the show had been on the Board of Directors of the Guild. Kind of shows you how toothless the Canadian Writers Guild is)

Exciting breakthrough for this guy, who needs to send an email to check on if a non-union project this fall is happening.

Re: The 2023-? Writers Guild of America strike
Yeah, this isn't ending anytime soon, as outlined in thisDeadline article.
“The endgame is to allow things to drag on until union members start losing their apartments and losing their houses,” a studio executive told Deadline. Acknowledging the cold-as-ice approach, several other sources reiterated the statement. One insider called it “a cruel but necessary evil.”
The studios and streamers’ next think financially strapped writers would go to WGA leadership and demand they restart talks before what could be a very cold Christmas. In that context, the studios and streamers feel they would be in a position to dictate most of the terms of any possible deal.
How do you all get your death notices since I left?
Re: The 2023-? WGA/ Possible SAG-AFTRA strike
We're about 12 hours from the SAG-AFTRA deadline of Friday at midnight. If the actors guild goes in lockstep with the writers, I think that could only strengthen their combined position. I read that Deadline article earlier this morning and the Studios are going into siege mode. But the rank-and-file of actors just everyday randos with other jobs; if anything, this would seem more like an extended time away from casting calls.
And in addition to the mediocrity at the head of studios, fuck Kim K for crossing the picket lines. Fucking asshole.
ETA: One strategy the streamers could use to keep the content pipes on his to start focusing on foreign series. But for every Squid Game, isn't there like 100 series no one would bother with? I only watched one non US language series on streaming (the Parisian Real Estate family show called The Agency), and I don't think it'd be good enough that I'd feel my life would be incomplete without it.

And here's Bob Iger...saying the writers/actors going on strike is going to put thousands of hard-working normal folks out of work...

Animation production was chugging along, but without the voice actors that'll shut down as well. (USA not Canada)
Have to think that IATSE and the other tech unions in the film/TV business will support the writers and actors. AI doesn't need electricians and audio and staging guys.

So Dsafe, serious question, how do media consumers come out for the unions in this battle? Not putting it on you to have the answers, but this can be impacted by what audiences do and I’d like to do what’s right and that doesn’t involve helping management.

As for Igor - didn't Disney JUST literally deleted a ton of programming as a write-off without letting it see the light of day? Maybe they should have, I dunno, NOT done that? Kept it around for just this moment?

You don't have to actually blow up your TV, as suggested, and I'm not going to tell anyone to not watch TV in any form. Aside from services like Netflix, so many conglomerates have streaming services, also. Bob Iger is a piece of shit, but I'm not going to suggest anyone not watch ESPN (and so on).
If you want to cancel a streaming service, cool. If you decide to not go see a movie in a theater and will wait until after the strikes, also cool.
I would ask that you not watch unscripted (reality) shows of all varieties, regardless of network/streaming service. I would ask that you not subscribe to any services until the strikes are over. I know TV ratings include a lot of inaccuracies because they've never really had a good way of getting strong data. I suspect streams, whether measured by number of streams or time watched, are more accurately measured because it's a direct line between provider and consumer.
Support the active voices on social media by amplifying their messages, not just liking them. I saw yesterday a list of things SAG-AFTRA members are supposed to do as part of their strike, which included stay off social media. I suspect that means just as far as promoting their projects. I follow Dave Anthony (writer, comedian, podcast host - The Dollop, The Audit, West Wing Thing). He is very far on the left. Many of you will not like him. But, he does not fuck around with this stuff.
And this one is very important: Support unions.
UPS is about to go on strike. If they do, please use another delivery service, if possible. USPS is unionized. If people are striking at your local Starbucks, go somewhere else for coffee. Don't use the self-check to lane at the grocery store because, while it's "for your convenience", it also allows the store to not pay a union employee to run a register (if you have one or two items, fine, but don't bring your half-cart of shit there and do it all yourself). If you drive by a business where employees are on a picket line, show support in some way, even if it's just honking your horn.
I am not a union member. What I do for work (let's call it worker bee middle management) will never be unionized in my lifetime. But, I work with a lot of people who are in unions. A lot of my work is because of people in unions.
It is important to support unions because management is coming for everyone in every industry, and I mean everyone in every industry. People are being kept poor so they have to go to work. This is absolutely done by design by management. Unions fight management. Support them.

Warner Brothers was a much bigger one. Batgirl, which was completed, was shelved. There were other projects where WB simply pulled the plug mid-stream, in some cases allowing the creators to finish if they were in the editing process (a sequel to "Scoob", which was a hit in our house, was one of them).tennbengal wrote: ↑Fri Jul 14, 2023 8:17 am Sorry for you being caught in the crosshairs, DSafe.

But, yes, the tax write-off benefits to Discovery Networks were viewed as more valuable to the company than releasing the actual content.

This shit drives me CRAZY. And the clearest sign that this shit isn't really about customer convenience. I've actually gone up to the desk at Harris Teeter after having 3 of the 4 self checkout registers clogged up with ppl with 40-50 items (full ass carts) taking 15 minutes to check themselves out. The fact that they very rarely have an item limit is very telling.DSafetyGuy wrote: ↑Fri Jul 14, 2023 8:19 amDon't use the self-check to lane at the grocery store because, while it's "for your convenience", it also allows the store to not pay a union employee to run a register (if you have one or two items, fine, but don't bring your half-cart of shit there and do it all yourself).cerranoredux wrote: ↑Thu Jul 13, 2023 8:55 pmSo Dsafe, serious question, how do media consumers come out for the unions in this battle? I use the self checkout for medium sized orders if I'm shopping at lunch and need to split my bags into refrigerator, freezer, and dry goods. Our main grocery store still seems to have more cashiers than most, but I'm sure that's just a matter of time.
