You'd get the same odds taking USA -5, which would be the better bet I think.

This is the worst overall start to a tournament I've ever seen. We talk about the expanded field but the big teams cannot breakdown the little ones. Other than Japan.
I appreciate the minnows working hard but the finishing overall has been appalling.

Some of the goalkeeping is embarrassing. But there have also been some incredible saves. The Filipino keeper stood on her head.

How much of the goalkeeping being less than stellar can be attributed to the size of the players? The net's still the same size, right? And some of these shots are coming in at speeds that don't look that far off form the men's game. I just wonder if naturally it will be a little "worse" because the women can't get the same reach that the men have.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Tue Jul 25, 2023 9:15 am Pretty much caught up on highlights...

My wife's amazing extended family are rooted in a good chunk of a village in the Philippines relocating to Ajax and Mississauga 60 some odd years ago. My FIL took another route and wound up in Seattle for medical school and then wound up in DC working at NIH. I mean "working" as like, whatever an Admiral would be in the PHS.. He was on the cover of Newsweek back when that meant something.
Anyways, I just texted the family thread that the Filipino GK is awesome... And possibly whiter than I am... I love this team!

So, having been a GK coach for both boys and girls, I've seen so much of both that I can kind of bake in that there are differences in terms what is plausible/feasible for the women.A_B wrote: ↑Tue Jul 25, 2023 9:34 amHow much of the goalkeeping being less than stellar can be attributed to the size of the players? My issue are the number of goals I've seen coming off of keepers literally spilling the ball into the net. I just don't recall seeing that so often in years past. The South Korean goalie gave up an absolute howler against Colombia. Ball is right at her and it just goes right threw her hands. I didn't mark them down, but I know at least 2 others from the last couple of days that are just high school level bad.
i mean, bad goals happen at all levels. The goal given up in the ENG-USA game in South Africa is a great example. But it's usually not happening 4-5 times in the group stage.

Casey Phair, the 16 yo who came on for South Korea and became the youngest player ever in a WC, plays for my daughter's club. She is teammates with the family friend I mentioned a few weeks ago who got capped for the England U16 squad.

Yes, but the coach never got to see them play and he is moving players between ECRL and ECNL when they start up in November. I'm hoping she decides to impress him. She played a couple tournaments this summer with a mixed RL/NL team, and she is so worried about people thinking she is a ball hog, she wasn't shooting or taking on defenders. I need her to understand that at a tryout or when an opportunity to move up presents, she needs to show off a bit. Or at least not one touch pass ever time the ball comes to her.

Have her watch Rodman, Alyssa Thompson and Sophia Smith. If I'm remembering watching those clips, she's in a high winger slot? Those players are great models, if so. If she's coming out of the back, have her focus on Crystal Dunn.

Also i think the offside rule needs to be revisited. Is this really an advantage?
There's no way a linesman could catch this in real time, the head is less than an inch ahead and it occurred 30 yards from goal.
Yes, the head is a scoring part of the body but not from 30 yards away while chasing a ball.
Maybe the rule should be modified according to which body part is playing the ball?

Re: 2023 World Cup
Pugh was the model for years, she primarily plays on the wing in a 4-3-3. This summer she played mostly as a 10, so she did slide a lot of balls through for breakaways to the forwards, but she passed up too many shooting opportunities. Every club coach tells her she needs to shoot more, and she is always more concerned about people thinking she is a ball hog. Varsity coach pulled her aside and told her the same thing and I think she will listen to him. She is even more concerned about the older girls thinking she is cocky or a ball hog, but he pulled her aside and told her he knows she can beat her defenders and would rather she her try and lose the ball than pass every time.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Tue Jul 25, 2023 10:59 am Girls, in particular, have trouble being "greedy" at times. Re: 2023 World Cup
I wouldn't necessarily put that on girls. Lots of players are too deferential particularly in new environments or more competitive environments than they're used to. You know what's worse than one touch back to sender? Five touches and losing it. Do that a few times and you won't have to worry about touches. You do have to go out of your way to show your strengths in a tryout scenario but I'd much sooner a team of kids that want to share it than a team of kids that try to beat third defenders or big touch and sprint. If you have a entire team of skilled aware movement players to me thats optimal and you just teach but I don't think most coaches are interested in that. Just way way way easier and probably more effective to rely on physical attributes.

Or at least the victims have to challenge. Why are FIFA reviewing offsides automatically? The Philippines had no idea and didn't protest the equalizer. I dog on hockey rules a lot but in hockey, you have to challenge offsides, at a risk of being penalized 2 minutes if you're wrong.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Tue Jul 25, 2023 12:01 pmOh, I meant to bring that up! It is what it is, so at this point, at least fix the rule to stop taking what should be a good goal off the board. The image we keep looking at is a pretty outrageous example of what you're talking about. So let's flip it so that the outliers (calls this close) break in the right way for the good of the game.degenerasian wrote: ↑Tue Jul 25, 2023 2:31 pmOr at least the victims have to challenge. I honestly don't see this changing anyone's style of play. You are still going to try and spring a trap... Shit, for a lot of defenders, that "oh shit, I'm keeping them on" thing is part of being a good defender. And forwards aren't going to all of a sudden get faster.. It's all about split second timing.

My parents have gone to bed for the night and I turned on their tv to watch usa v. Netherlands. But Directv is in a dispute with Nextar, which owns the station slated to show the game - so that channel is temporarily off the air. Nextar owns 197 stations across the country, so this is perhaps a notable issue for ratings.
