Holy shit that was so fun. A short mock game with other potential contestants and a small interview. In the pool for the next 18 months, and I really hope I get the call.

Have you trained on the buzzer? The This is Jeopardy podcast has an entire episode on the buzzer.

They made us pretend to use a buzzer (my pen) and hold it at about head height when we did our last zoom interview. I need to listen to that pod, and I've been trying to fake ringing in while watching recent episodes of the show.

And don't run into a master. The latest episode had the production team reach out to the 148 players who lost to Ken Jennings. The stories are pretty sad. An entire lifetime to get on Jeopardy and then run into that guy.

I think they are hinting that next year, the 20th anniversary of Jennings run, there may be a Ken Jennings Roadkill Tournament.

Keep practicing, with all these tournaments going there probably won't be any new player until spring.

I'm listening to the inside jeopardy podcast, each week they interview a player, the prep these players are doing is insane.

Gotta admit. I feel really scuzzy watching this season knowing that so to get around the writer's strike, they're recycling clues from prior seasons, along with recycling contestants.

All of that is definitely unpleasant at best. Davo being anti-labor is no surprise at all. Selfishly, I'm watching people from last season get a second chance while also watching my window to get called shrink at the same time.

Gonna go out on a real limb here: most producers/production companies (when you get down to it, they are one and the same) prefer right-to-work states because of the savings in paying people union rates and all the accompanying things like pension, etc. In this case, since he's the president and CEO of a production company, Davo has probably made a substantial amount of money by not paying people who work for him. He's also the guy who benefited when they had to can the previous executive producer of the show who also tried to make himself the host replacing Trebek.

I heard your window will be extended 6 months.

That said, there will be less opportunity for you. Michael Davies is ruining Jeopardy by giving people second chances. 36 people per season is too much, maybe cut that in half to 18, maybe even 9. Only give it to people with really close calls or losing to super champs. Then there's Champions Wildcard, well if you give people who never won a second chance, what about people who won only once... then it snowballs, then he wants an invitational and then he wants Masters so you can see Holzhauer crush it every year. He wants the best to play the best but I'm not sure if that's what Jeopardy really is.

As for hosting, what a weird road it has been to get to this point. James is a sensation, leading to GOAT. Ken wins GOAT. Ken becoming a consultant, Trebek's passing, Ken starts off but leads to guest hosting. Some of Ken's old tweets are dug up. Then weeks of guest hosts.

Mike Richards gets the job along with Mayim doing primetime. Mike hosts as the official host for one tape day. Then Mike loses the job after Claire's expose. Ken splits the hosting with Mayim, though Mayim seems to be the primary choice. Mayim's show gets renewed and Ken hosts more often. Then her show gets cancelled, seemingly opening up for her to host more often. Then the strike happens and Mayim declines to host. And now we're here, with her not having a role at least on the main show.

Ok, in case people are not reading the article...here is the bit on the strike stuff...

Then there’s the matter of her absence from the entirety of the current season of Jeopardy!, which began airing in September. In May, Bialik announced that she would cease hosting Jeopardy! in solidarity with the Writers Guild of America, which was on strike. “There’s a lot of complexity to this, but my general statement is always that I come from a union family,” she said later. “While it’s not for me to personally judge anyone else’s decision, for me, I am a union supporter—pretty much all unions and what they fight for.”

Sources close to the show say this stand was not exactly what it seemed. Jeopardy! and other game shows are guided by a distinct set of union provisions known as the Network Television Code, meaning that while Jeopardy!’s writers are members of the WGA and thus were part of the strike—many were prominent figures on picket lines in Los Angeles and New York—the rest of the staff and crew were not. SAG-AFTRA—which began its own strike in July and of which Bialik and Jennings are both members—explicitly advises non-striking members to continue to work per the terms of their contracts; to do otherwise can weaken the union’s negotiating power because it indicates that members might not follow the letter of the contract.

There was also a semi-recent precedent at Jeopardy!: During the 2007-08 writers strike, Trebek hosted throughout the work stoppage. Both then and during this year’s strike, the quiz show used only clues written before the writers decamped. (The Network Television Code is governed by its own contract, which runs through June 2024.)

Bialik’s move, however, left many decrying Jennings as a scab and criticizing Jeopardy! for taping at all. The actor Wil Wheaton, a friend of Bialik’s who she said was the first to predict she would get the Jeopardy! job, slammed Jennings in a widely discussed Facebook post in which he wrote, “Your privilege may protect you right now, but we will *never* forget.”

On December 18, Puck’s Matthew Belloni reported that Bialik’s decision to step back from hosting during the writers strike left Jeopardy! executive producer Michael Davies and Sony executive vice president of game shows Suzanne Prete “furious.” The WGA strike concluded in September, with SAG-AFTRA following in November, and Bialik still did not return to the show.

That article you linked was +/- a hit piece on an otherwise outspoken person with controversial opinions, though admittedly I don’t follow anything entertainment-wise, so most of it was all news to me…But her decision to sit out in solidarity with the writers? I can appreciate that.

For the record, the very fact there’s language in a CBA forbidding particular unions from showing solidarity for other unions is LOL as fuck. You don’t need to be an anti-vax whack-job to appreciate that.

During the writers' strike, SAG and AFTRA members were encouraged to support that strike. There is a shift toward solidarity across these lines outweighing the "weakening of the union's negotiating power/letter of the contract" clause in that article. Never once during either of the strikes from this year did I read or hear anything about one union fearing a loss of their negotiating power by supporting another union.
