Re: Random Politics
Who knew Oklahoma bordered Colorado. Somehow the New Mexico border seems less surprising
Re: Random Politics
Yeah, what's the deal with that New Mexico border with its two neighbors to the east? Why isn't it just a straight line north to south?

If I were to make a guess, it would be that the mapmakers/surveyors weren't exact back in the day and no one wanted to change it.

Re: Random Politics
I have a book somewhere called “How The States Got Their Shapes” and some of it is fascinating. I don’t remember that specific one though.
(When it comes to anything west of the Mississippi usually the answer is “slavery” or “the rule of five degrees” in which Congress at the time didn’t want states larger than about five degrees of latitude. Though that wouldn’t explain the “notch” in NM.

Re: Random Politics
Colorado has 697 sides.
Vermont has 251 towns and cities. There are also 4 gores that are un-incorporated parts of land that basically are there because 18th-century survey equipment sucks and basically no one lives in these gores, so fuck it.
and for the NM "notch":
"New Mexico has a bit of the Oklahoma Panhandle because of a boundary dispute that was resolved by the U.S. Supreme Court in the late 19th century. The Court ruled in favor of New Mexico, stating that the boundary between the two states should follow the 103rd Meridian, which runs through the Oklahoma Panhandle. This decision was based on the 1866 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which established the boundaries between the U.S. and Mexico following the Mexican-American War."

It’s funny to picture Trump going statue mode instead of McConnell because you know all the little sycophant politicians would immediately adopt 15 second pauses while speaking.

Re: Random Politics
Well done, as usual with the Lincoln Project. I'm a bit surprised, as I thought the purpose of the Lincoln Project was to take out Trump. It's founded and run by a bunch of former GOP pundits and insiders, so what's the goal? Do they just hate DeSantis as much as they hate Trump? Who are they supporting?

I know folks think that "the center" is a squishy place, occupied mostly by politicians and wonks that benefit from the status quo, but...
The Lincoln Project guys are very much against the knuckle dragging/religious right takeover of the GOP. The tension btwn blue blood/old school republicans and the mouthbreathing wing is (obviously) at an all-time high and it is why even though the Dems can be fractious at times, they don't hold a candle to the dysfunction in the GOP.
It wasn't that long ago, on this board, that we were lamenting the fact that the GOP is so good at being consistent with their messaging. That's fine and dandy when you're not being low key racist and misogynistic and taking away women's medical rights.

Weren't all these guys instrumental in bringing and keeping the knuckle dragging religious right into the GOP?Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Thu Aug 31, 2023 2:24 pmThe Lincoln Project guys are very much against the knuckle dragging/religious right takeover of the GOP.
They are ostensibly opposed to Trump and the authoritarian turn the GOP has made since Trump.
Or, they see an opportunity to put a bunch of money in their own pockets by opposing Trump and the authoritarian turn the GOP has made since Trump.

Re: Random Politics
I don't really know if I'd put this current iteration of the GOP squarely on these guys. They worked for the McCain's of the world.
With that said, did these guys roll the dice with Sara Palin, for example? Did they play pretty fast and loose with dog whistles during certain campaigns. Were they pretty OK taking money from far right christian conservatives?
They absolutely are part of the system that brought us to this point, absolutely.
