Re: Proud Parental Unit Crowing Thread
My daughter just completed her first week of her new job in Washington DC as a data scientist for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), and we just got off the phone with her. She is really stoked about her new job and about living out there. It will be quite an adventure for her, moving from one Washington to the other.
She still has her apartment in Seattle until the end of August and her boss is letting her work remotely until then (they only require two days physically in the office per week, anyway), but she wanted to spend her first week on site, to meet people and get oriented. So, she and her boyfriend got an air bnb for this past week.

Nice, a go-getter! My burgeoning little software shop hired their first FT data scientist this year. Seems like a sweet gig especially since everyone want KPIs but they don’t know what they mean. Plus anything that doesn’t look right he can just blame on the devs for providing shitty data.
I felt aswirl with warm secretions.

Damn. I should’ve had her apply with you. Then I could get drunk with the boss.rass wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2023 8:50 pm My burgeoning little software shop hired their first FT data scientist this year. Pretty sure the nine year old was kissed by a ten year old this week. He'd never admit it to us but the 10 year old's mom heard about it.

On an unrelated note. It’s a normal stage of growing up for a girl to have a crush on her father.Giff wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2023 10:51 pmMeanwhile my 8-year-old admitted she has a crush on Shrek. I love how Shannon outsmarted Sophia by moving to the bigger window, waiting for her to come over, then stealing the prime spot at the smaller window.

It's not bad, 5 feet by 5 feet so you can curl up in it. But the kids will never let me lie down in peace without crawling all over me.MaxWebster wrote: ↑Mon Aug 28, 2023 7:29 am honestly that playpen looks quite cozy for an adult, quality nap spot.

Re: Proud Parental Unit Crowing Thread
The girl made the varsity soccer team last week as a Freshman. First preseason game today (against Cerrano's school), and she started and played all but 5 minutes, coach just took her off and threw her right back in to play a different position. When she was playing in the 10, she was marked by a senior who committed to a D1 school (not sure which school) and really held her own. She was overmatched physically a couple of times, but she knocked the girl off balance once with a shoulder charge and stole the ball and beat her on the dribble a few times. 4-0 loss, so she played a lot more in her own box than I ever want to see. On the negative side, she was carried off with about 2 minutes left. She jumped to head a corner and felt a pop in her Achilles when she landed. Hoping it's nothing. I was thinking she was just exhausted and frustrated, but she is still limping.

Thanks, I’ll have her do that when she wakes up. I don’t think it’s bad, I think she was scared feeling it, and said it went numb for a minute which really scared her.

Limping a little this morning, but now that she is dressed for practice she is saying she is fine. She has to get cleared by the school trainer before she can practice. I want her to sit out today, but she is worried they won't let her play tomorrow if she sits today. My guess is tendonitis. She was complaining about it last week, but said it wasn't bad.

Kid.is very excited for international politics and the courses are taught by Kennedy School profs so should be a good experience.

If I can give one bit of advice to you parents of high schoolers - it is for a kid to “show interest” in prospective universities by hitting their websites, signing in for things on their sites, etc.
My daughter had “straight A’s boom” (as a swamper kid once said), and killed the SAT and ACT tests, but got rejected on a few of her college applications. The college counselor we used said that her lack of “showing interest” was a likely reason.

Re: Proud Parental Unit Crowing Thread
100% agree. The schools admissions folks are trying to figure out who "really wants to go" versus applying. When I do alumni interviews for my school, the key things they ask us to try and evaluate are 1.) Where does the school fall on the priority list (we are no longer allowed to ask what other schools they are considering 2.) Why the school (to see if they know it) and 3.) What will they contribute to the campus community.sancarlos wrote: ↑Tue Aug 29, 2023 5:00 pm If I can give one bit of advice to you parents of high schoolers - it is for a kid to “show interest” in prospective universities by hitting their websites, signing in for things on their sites, etc.

So if a kid has not visited before applying. Huge ding. If the kid does not know the majors, academic schedule (my school has an interesting trimester model), the unique aspects of the honor code, some of the more well known and described traditions (speaking tradition started when Lee was President), it comes out and gets documented.
On the other hand the last several years I have almost exclusively interviewed kids who were early admission recruited athletes or did not have the academic success to get accepted.

If the colleges are tracking if they visit the website that's weird as fuck. I need a vpn.

Re: Proud Parental Unit Crowing Thread
I've been harping on my son about this ever since you (or someobody) mentioned this before. What type of interactions are monitored? I know he (and I) get tons of emails from schools. Is it a matter of opening the emails? How do they track if he went to their website, is it a login? We have registered and visited most of the schools he is thinking about on scheduled guided tours. What else does he need to do? Second visit for open house? A couple schools have had admissions officers reach out saying they are his assigned officer, does he need to email them and ask questions?sancarlos wrote: ↑Tue Aug 29, 2023 5:00 pm If I can give one bit of advice to you parents of high schoolers - it is for a kid to “show interest” in prospective universities by hitting their websites, signing in for things on their sites, etc.
