Went to one or two Buffett shows back in my Deadhead days. Free tickets, lots of weed, why not? Music never did anything for me. Parrotheads were like Deadheads who had jobs and money.

Not ashamed to admit, I enjoyed is music, old and new. I grew up surrounded by Jimmy Buffet wannabes so maybe I was just impressed by the real thing.

I think I heard that he has a new album coming out. This is a risky marketing strategy, but I bet it pays off. For his estate.

During a performance in Nashville, Tennessee on April 11, 2023, Buffett said he had recorded an album entitled Equal Strain on All Parts. Buffett got the idea for the album title from his grandfather's description of a nap. The album has yet to be released
The cause of death has not been announced, but sounds like family and friends were there. Makes me think a cancer diagnosis late/rapid impact...but who knows.

Interesting to realize he only had 1 top 10 for his songs, but 3 #1s in duets with country singers....and of course 3 #1s on the NY Times as an author.

Of course my cousin was the producer on the Broadway production of Escape to Margaritaville which from what I can tell was a dud (as was his stage production Herman Wouk's Don't Stop the Carnival).

Not like I needed a reason to as it’s my favorite drink, but I’ll definitely be having a margarita in his honor today.

And until about 6 months ago, I was convinced the line was “Blew out my flip-flops / Stepped on a Pop-Tart”.

Saw that TMZ is saying it was lymphoma.

And...is this a safe space? I never really cared for his music, outside of "Come Monday", which I learned to play on the guitar. But I have lots of friends who were super into him...including a few you went to Paris (!) to see him play.

Good on him for finding his niche and making it work for him. And for inspiring this great Kyle Kinane bit about how "Margaritaville" is the darkest song ever written.

Maybe Philadelphians just have the brains of 5 or 6 year olds because I used to think that, too, when I was that young.

Jimmy also helped me learn me what “screw” means in certain contexts. At roughly around the same age, I’d guess.

Jimmy Buffett was like reggae music to me. When I'm at a tiki bar or some food / bar stand on the beach, I like to hear it.

For about 15 minutes.

Man oh man do I know more than a few parrotheads. A few of whom slid right out of the Dead after Jerry died.

RIP.

I really only knew the hits but a buddy of mine had him on all day at the pool and now I’m gonna do a deep dive. I didn’t realize Jerry Jeff Walker was partly responsible for his rise and a lot of what I heard yesterday sounded different than what I expected.

And yes, Margaritaville is a dark song. He’s basically singing about an alcoholic.

I have liked Buffett for a long time. First concert was supposed to be Little Feat opening for Buffett at Merriweather Post but the tickets fell out of my dad's pocket walking to gates.

But I also feel like this was fair too.

Given the choice between Buffet and Kenny Chesney's No Shoes radio, I will go buffett 99 times out of 98.

Did people not hate their jobs and enjoy drinking and beaches before Jimmy Buffett wrote a song? DMB covered A Pirate Looks at Forty at the Gorge this weekend and the song is stuck in my head (for good reasons); might need to listen to more Buffett.

Danced to A Pirate Looks at Forty at my wedding with my mom. (mother mother ocean and all that.)

Bought his box set and read all of his books. Never got around to seeing him live, mainly because I would want to see him play his songs without all the insider Parrothead bullshit.

Glad his family and friends could say goodbye in person.

I was trying to figure out how someone could have so many horrible takes (mostly about music) so I dug a little deeper. According the review of his recent book on Amazon, he "has emerged as one of the most talked-about writers in the nation." The jacket reviews include Vivek Ramaswamy and Peter Thiel, so I'm thinking the book isn't for me. That, and the point of the book is how we need to change the legal system to eradicate "Woke" culture.

The thing that sticks in my head (for some reason) is a funny throwaway line from an old book by P.J. O’Rourke:
“Jimmy Buffett invited me down to watch the America’s Cup sailing races with him. He said that if I watched it in person, I’d feel about sailing the way John Hinckley felt about Jodie Foster.”
