The Mike Tyson air drum / punch song in "The Hangover" would be my go-to for a younger person. And if they said "who's Mike Tyson" or "whats The Hangover", I'd jump out of the nearest window.

Sooo ... I would say if you asked me to name any member of Genesis, past or present, I would have just said Collins. But if you then said what about Peter Gabriel it would have probably rang a bell?

I'll sign on to this. First thing that pops up for me is the Sledgehammer video. I remembered he had several similar ones. Googling, I recognize a lot of his songs but don't recall the videos. Most of the songs I knew I don't think I could have said who sang them. It was mostly just before my time.

yeah that mid 80s-and-after Genesis was not... really ... Genesis.

I mean obviously like what you like (my wife loves a lot of that Invisible Touch stuff. ...hmm.) but I Know What I Like and it's their old/original stuff which is gloriously weird.

Looking forward to watching this when I have some time. Scrolled through the first video for a few minutes, and WTF was that? The flute guy scared me, but I want to hear more! Never would have guessed that was Genesis, I only know the mid-80s Invisible Touch, Land of Confussion (I thought that was the greatest video ever, with the world leader puppets) and of course In the Air Tonight. Did they just sell out, or was Gabriel the creative force and they were left with the more pop sound after he left?

You can certainly find people who agree with each, or multiple, of the above sentiments. Gabriel himself publicly agreed with all of them.

ya as sc says there was definitely a lot of chatter around that, but it's also maybe a simplistic view that Phil Collins "made them go pop" - I love that 70s Genesis shit but honestly i think maybe my favourite album front to back is the first after Gabriel left: A Trick of the Tail (1976). Definitely some more concise melodies (thinking of the title track) but then again... I Know What I Like is pretty poppy (1973) so who knows. And it wasn't until a few albums after that that they changed more but who's to say they wouldn't have under Gabriel too? I mean by 1986 the top 2 albums in the world were probably Invisible Touch and So which is fascinating but Sledgehammer* isn't exactly prog...

TL;DR: it's complicated and they probably would have moved out of longform prog anyways. e.g. look at Yes who in 1973 had a double album of FOUR SONGS (terrible) and then 9+ years later put out "90125" which was brilliant 80s complex pop. It was probably just the times.

*I always hated that song even if the album was <ahem> so-so. But oddly Harry Styles' live-in-Stern-studio version made me appreciate the song.

I saw Genesis during the Last Domino tour because I had never seen them live and wanted the experience even with Phil Collins half the singer he used to be. That tour along with their 2007 they had settled into a nice mix of the old and new. Just because they got popular doesn't meant they still weren't good...similar to what Max said I think they just changed with the times. Yes, I never need to hear the song Invisible Touch again but each album had some longer instrumental/prog cuts (Fading Lights, Domino, Home by the Sea, etc.). What was kinda cool on the last tour was they played the majority of I Can't Dance with just the three remaining members.

For my money Duke and the self-titled album was their peak.
I would like expensive whiskey.

I mean, my username on my latest instance of Kali is Rael.

I dunno. I just always figured like everyone knew Peter Gabriel was the original frontman in Genesis. But hell, nothing should surprise me considering I once talked to a lawyer a couple years ago at a bar as he tried to argue what he thought hurricane season "really was" despite the technical window (June through November). I said, "man, you've got this Cliff Clavin vibe going pretty strong for you."

"Huh?"

"Cheers. Cliff Clavin arguing the most banal things to pass the time?"

"I can honestly say I've never seen an episode of Cheers in my life."

"Of course you haven't..."

It's not a competition. Those things you're talking about are real, and they'd definitely wear you down. My pets are all at least 12 or 13, with one of the cats having lost a ton of weight and the dog slowing down way earlier on the hikes than he used to.

Here's hoping this round of surgeries takes and you can move on.

I’ve been watching the Wales v Argentina match in the Rugby World Cup today.

It’s freakin exhausting. Half the guys on the field are built like Aaron Donald. And when one of the speed guys get the ball to start a breakaway, they often get de-cleated before they can reach open space.

That’s all I got.

Max knows my love for Supper's Ready, I didn't really know Gabriel / Genesis did prog until I went to college, then again my parents were folkies so all I'd heard was the pop stuff. I also fought listening to early Genesis because Gabriel is responsible for making us suffer through fucking Kate Bush.

I relented, and the early stuff is done off the proggiest of prog.
