NFL 2023 - Week 7

Post by Pruitt IV »

Just read this about the Bears' starting QB this weekend...
They are rolling with Tyson Bagent at quarterback, a rookie out of Shepherd College. His last start came in the Division II semifinals last season vs. Colorado School of Mines. He went 19-for-34 for 165 yards, no TDs, two interceptions and was sacked eight times in a 44-13 loss.

Fortunately the Raiders D are not as strong as Colorado School of Mines.

Don't worry, Nathan Peterman is backing him up and the Bears also signed Trace McSorley to the practice squad. Legends of the game, one and all.

The Bears offensive ranks are so low that dropping the QB and passing offense essentially to zero on my scale barely moved the needle. That and uhhh that Raiders are horrendous.

It appears that the Shepherd College offensive line play in that game should have prepared him for playing behind the Bears’ o-line this weekend.

ETA: in Tyson Bagent’s defense, I saw him in a preseason game, and he looked really good, playing against guys who probably aren’t in the league anymore.

I actually watched that game (I watch CSM games when I can and usually go to one or two a year)...I never would have thought the kid as sniffing the pros let alone playing.

Well, at least Bagent doesn't have to face Garoppolo in his first career start. Hoyer, Aidan O'Connell?

After tomorrow’s game against Baltimore the Lions have only one more true outdoor game (at Chicago).

(The others - @ Chargers, @ New Orleans, @ Minnesota, @ Dallas).

I mean if they can get homefield and shield Goff from the elements they'd be hard to bet against.

Then again if he has to go on the road, the only real fear would be @ Philly. The rest are domes or warm weather cities. And I guess he was a lot better in the cold last year.

Watching the DET-BAL game and a couple thoughts popped up:

1. Ravens won the toss and chose to receive, and Burkhardt mentioned that teams most teams today defer. It’s been a decade, and I still don’t see the inherent advantages of deferring.

2. The midfield logo in Baltimore. Is it smaller than I remember? I feel like I remember in the past it was big enough that you could make it out in low Earth orbit.

3. Similarly, what’s the significance of in the one end zone where it highlights the “MO” where it reads baltiMOre?

I know could just google all this, just curious if I’m the only one.

Deferring gives you the extremely slight chance for the other team to fuck up and say kick then you get it to start both halves.

For third, it was a kid that had cancer I think who was a massive fan. His name was mo.

I loved Baltimore this week until I regressed them for playing in London last week. A mistake so far, this team has top-3 peripherals but has just played some weird weird games.

Given that Daniel Jones' best year was when he fully morphed into Tyrod Taylor, perhaps the better move would have been just going with Tyrod Taylor.

They won their two prime time games. Baltimore is really good. No crime in losing to a really good team on the road. Hopefully the Lions win next week (in prime time) and go 6-2 into the bye.

Baltimore is as jeckyl and hyde as it gets - the consistent theme is they play down to their competition. Detroit just looks off. Beaten to the punch time and again.

We was NFC rookie of the year. He made a Pro Bowl. He was a team leader on that great ‘85 Bears team. He was injured a lot, but he was highly regarded as a really good qb until the cumulative injuries became too much.

Jim McMahon had a gaudy W/L record, but holy crap his QB passing #s look like he played in the 1930s and not the 1980s.

In terms of succession plans, you can point to Yankees CFs going from DiMaggio to Mantle, or 49ers QBs going from Montana to Young. It’s time we start pointing out that arguably the two best Tight Ends of all time have manned Kansas City this entire century.

Gronk played for KC? And enough about National Tight End Day, RedZone

Kelce has Gronk on longevity, but his blocking doesn't compare (which could explain his longevity)

Those previous two handoffs you mentioned were pretty close to immediate. Kansas City had a five year gap between Gonzales and Kelce. (Really six years because Kelce only played one snap his rookie year.)

You right. I didn’t realize that Gonzalez went to Atlanta that early. I was thinking it was later and he left after Kelce emerged.

I hate that penalty - underthrown ball gets the PI call because the defender didn't turn around. Freakin pass hits the defender in his back.

I hate when teams can't challenge because they used them up or ran out of timeouts. Let teams challenge as much as they want and give them a 15 yard penaty when the challenge is no good. Or just make it like college when the refs decide to review things.
