(And, if he plays intramural soccer, he’ll be a star!)
I was going to say that there might be a rule against student-athletes playing intramurals but then I remembered my dorm's basketball team losing by 4 to the football players team in the championship game my senior year thanks to me missing the front end of a one-and-one.
You did better against your school's football team (well, there were only four or five football players on the team) did than my intramural team did against ours.

LOTS better.

We were as surprised as everyone else. It was the last raucous crowd I ever played in front of cause they were destroying teams all season and people couldn't believe it, so of course we turned into the crowd favorite. I misremembered earlier...it wasn't a one-and-one. We were down 3 with so little time left that I needed to try the "whole make first one, intentionally miss second one and hope for offensive rebound" play. I failed.

Speaking of basketball, my daughter made the third and last day of basketball tryouts. There are 30 spots and 91 girls tried out. The first cut was today after two mornings of tryouts, but not sure how many they cut. I've just been impressed with all she has going on with cheerleading and dance, that she's doing this. I'm a bad basketball Dad since she's never played any organized leagues. I failed.

If she has no experience and still made it this far, then she must be relying solely on her genetic talent. Way to go in passing on those basketball genes!

4/5 of the most impressive athletic feats I've seen up close (sidelines) were off sport intramurals. Rasheed Wallace and rusty larue played fullcourt was the other.

Nah, we got completely greased by a team made up of approximately half football players and half "guys who were playing at the good gym at 10:45pm every Friday and Saturday night". Refs were more intimidated of the other team than we were. Goal became to a.) score and b.) not get dunked on. Some succeeded, others did not.

Highlight of the game was when one of our guys broke up an alley-oop.

You did intramurals all wrong. Freshman year at end of school we had co-ed freshmen/dorm softball league at the end of the year. Everyone went for the big athletes, my buddy built a team around all of the good looking gals and his friends. Most were varsity athletes who were excited to be recruited. We won and had way more fun.

Mostly. We had a good number of Indians, Chinese and Koreans, but they didn't help our ally-oop game. We did have a 6'10" center who graduated when I was in 8th grade who went on to play at Syracuse. He dunked, but I don't think he was athletic enough for ally-oops. And the year behind me we had a Puerto Rican kid who was dunking in middle school games. He could have been great, but was more interested in drugs and partying. He pops up on my Facebook "people you might know" periodically, time has not been kind.

LOL so the kiddo cried for an hour this morning. Not because she didn't make the team, but because now she has to do track offseason to stay in Athletics class rather than move to PE.

I don't blame her, I'd cry too if I had to run track. My daughter always put up a huge fight every year when we'd try to get her to join my son's track and cross-country program. I am impressed at the level of competition to get on the basketball team. My daughter's first year of travel basketball consisted of the coach calling me and begging to have my daughter play. He had 2 girls sign up for tryouts, and he was desperate to get the number up to 8 to enter the league. 5th grade, and only about 3 girls had ever even played rec.

They have an option where if you are in enough activities outside of school, you can have an advisory period instead of Athletics or PE. She qualifies due to her dance, we just don't know if that will mess with her schedule and we don't want to do that since she's excelling in the classroom right now.

That reminds me of a story from when my daughter was a freshman in high school. She was not a sporty girl like your daughters. At all. But she mistakenly thought that by going out for tennis she could avoid having to be in PE class the following semester. So she and her friend went out. And showed remarkably little skill or interest. Refused to go practice with me. She rarely got to play a match, except when another local school with enough girls on their team so the two end-o-the-bench “D” squads could play each other. You never saw such a boring matches between uninterested girls.

Luckily, we had academics to fall back on, because we sure as hell weren’t getting an athletic scholarship.

I've been at flag football games the past few weeks. The level of ability and buy in varies. The girl decided to hide the 0-30 embarrassment by dancing on the field.

We need a David Attenborough voice-over. Enjoy, Degen. Feeling a little sad that this is the first year I don't have a kid trick-or-treating. Granted they were too old for it last year, but still dressed up for parties and hit a few houses. No more Dad Tax on Halloween

Thanks! Halloween was fun, went to the mall and they were a hit, got stopped at every store as they walked around having no clue what was going on. Did a quick evening tour of the neighborhood too until they passed out.

Early Action closed yesterday for most of the schools my son is applying, and he just got his first acceptance from Binghamton University. Shocked it came this early, they said to expect early action decisions by Christmas. Just a huge relief to know he got one of his top choices and we don’t have to stress or scramble.

I’m secretly rooting for him to go to Binghamton as it’s 2 miles from my parents. I played a lot of sports on campus as a kid. I love the idea of him having my parents for a free meal or to get away for a few hours, and for them of course. Plus it’ll be nice combining visits on trips. And it’s a great school, and cheaper out of state than Rutgers is in state.
