I'm in charge of Turkey and Brussels Sprouts. Any good sprouts recipes are appreciated.
My gall is sufficiently mitigated. Thank you for your concern.
Re: Thanksgiving 2022/2023
We are going to a local steakhouse for dinner and I couldn't be happier. Thanksgiving food sucks.

I think giff's said that before and it really mystifies me.

Re: Thanksgiving 2022/2023
I read this before the previous post, thought you were telling JLo to drug his family. Which would make for some great stories, I'm sure.
S-i-L creating drama yet again. We always host. S-i-L and her family as well as her husband's parents, my parents and my in-laws. SiL is going to her inlaws this year for a variety of reasons, which would be fine, but she is insisting we start at 6:00pm so she can do lunch at her inlaws then come to us for dinner. S-i-L showed up 2 hours late last year (she lives 15 minutes away) after calling numerous times saying they weren't coming at all. The first call came after her in-laws made the 2 hour drive and were already at our house and the only guests to arrive. "Umm, your D-i-L called, guess you aren't going to see your son or grandchildren today." Kids drove themselves there 90 minutes late. S-i-L showed 2 hours late and B-i-L drove separately at some point and just slept on our livingroom couch, not sure he even said hi.
Anyways, my wife told her to come for dessert, and we'll do dinner without them. I agree with my wife, because I can totally see being stuck with my F-i-L screaming that he is hungry as my food dries out for 2 hours while we wonder if they are showing at all. Family...

Re: Thanksgiving 2022/2023
As much as I love it, I never think to do it more than once a year. Probably because I have leftovers 2 meals a day for 5 days every year.

Whole pecan pies for $3.99 at the grocery I walk to for lunch. It's ok but not a breakfast food. Stomach.

A rare/medium rare ribeye is better than any fucking turkey even on an arbitrary Thursday.

Tom Segura and his wife totally agree. They propose steak and lobster.
And, yes, we had this discussion last year (I read thru this morning and got a good chuckle.)

Re: Thanksgiving 2022/2023
My wife loves a roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy and then some kind of vegetable side. So, not necessarily a turkey dinner, but pretty close.
And as discussed, the leftovers often surpass the quality/enjoyment of the actual dinner. Open faced turkey sandwiches with gravy and stuffing and mashed potatoes made into cakes fried up to accompany is money.

Re: Thanksgiving 2022/2023
I forgot where I found it, but I made sprouts with bacon and crushed up honey roasted peanuts with a sweet/spicy glaze that was excellent.
This year I'm thinking I do one with pancetta in instead.

Re: Thanksgiving 2022/2023
I think I've said this before but pie as a breakfast food should be more normalized. Its obv not healthy, but is it all that different than doughnuts or muffins or anything else sugary?
Re: Thanksgiving 2022/2023
Also roasted brussels sprouts have a pretty short window where they're optimal so for a meal like this, I think shredded is the way to go.
Re: Thanksgiving 2022/2023
That sounds great. Roast the Brussels Sprouts. Don’t steam.

This is a great point.
I'm not a dessert guy, frankly. But pie for breakfast? Sign me up.

This. I love Thanksgiving food except turkey. At best, turkey is fine.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.
Re: Thanksgiving 2022/2023
Well sure, I'm not knocking the steak dinner. But a well-roasted turkey is pretty awesome too, and then you have all the sides and deserts. And as others have mentioned, great leftovers. We started doing a turkey soup a couple of days later, and it's pretty fantastic.
Totally Kafkaesque
Re: Thanksgiving 2022/2023
The leftovers is the biggest con IMO.

This culinary blasphemy shall not stand.
Re: Thanksgiving 2022/2023
I love leftovers of the Thanksgiving meal. Last year, I think I ate the Thanksgiving meal three or four times. Plus at least one turkey sandwich. Plus, my wife made a pot of soup using the turkey carcass. Plus, pie for breakfast at least once.

I'm with Giff on this...if the food was that good why is there always a bunch left?
I would like expensive whiskey.
We only have beer & wine...

Re: Thanksgiving 2022/2023
Because we cook a ton extra to make sure we have leftovers! I'm with Giff on variety every other week of the year, but there is something magical about leftover Thanksgiving food. Reminds me of my youth.

Re: Thanksgiving 2022/2023
There was never a lot of leftovers at my house growing up because we had so many people come over. Then we went potluck style with the wife's family when we went there. now we cook in our house, but we know there's less people. 10 max this year probably, and we will make accordingly. I want enough leftovers for one meal, then maybe some turkey sammies on gooey white bread.

Re: Thanksgiving 2022/2023
Unless they're only serving one dish and it's re-heated in a microwave, I don't see your point here.

If you make steak for Thanksgiving, your sentence won't need the "but".

Re: Thanksgiving 2022/2023
There are 360 other days that are great for a steak. I love traditional Thanksgiving food.

I love Thanksgiving food, but it's also a low-floor, high-ceiling meal. and with it being a road game this season, I'm not nearly as enthused as I normally am

Re: Thanksgiving 2022/2023
Me prior to joining the military would've agreed with Giff.
But after getting stationed in Louisiana and having a fried Cajun turkey for the first time in my life I realized that Thanksgiving was being done wrong, turkey-wise.
(But you can shoot that green bean casserole into the sun unless you're going to do it from scratch with non-canned ingredients.)

I felt that way as soon as I had a turducken stuffed with sausage stuffing and smothered in turkey gravy one Thanksgiving. It ruined future Turkey Days for me.Johnnie wrote: ↑Thu Nov 16, 2023 7:48 pm Me prior to joining the military would've agreed with Giff.

Green bean casserole can die. Never even saw it until I got married and could not figure out how these people didn’t know how to make good half runners.

Holidays are always touch-and-go with matching OCD or whatever my brain has so got an early start. Stocked up on butter, buttermilk and cream but they were out of frozen cranberries. Troubling.
