Russ Francis’s wiki page wrote: … Following the 1980 season, Francis retired from professional football. Two things that Francis has said contributed greatly to this decision were, one, when the Patriots refused to give him his promised bonus for making the Pro Bowl (because his injury from a motorcycle accident kept him out of the game); and, secondly, when his roommate, Darryl Stingley, was paralyzed by a Jack Tatum hit in August 1978, the Patriots tried to cancel Stingley's medical insurance. Francis was the first teammate at Stingley's side immediately after the hit, and he has said it was tough to play after that…(he later came out of retirement)…

Piper Laurie

If you’ve never seen the classic 1961 film, The Hustler, you really ought to do yourself a favor and check it out. Starred Paul Newman (as Fast Eddie Felson), Piper Laurie, George C. Scott, and Jackie Gleason (as Minnesota Fats).

(The 1986 film The Color of Money, was its sequel, starring Newman and Tom Cruise.)

The Hustler was a fantastic movie. I just learned now that Minnesota Fats was the movie character before the real guy. This whole time I thought Jackie Gleason was playing a fictionalized version of the real Rudolf Wanderone.

He went viral after calling out Jeff Flake on an airplane several years ago.

Ken Mattingly, Astronaut Scrubbed From Apollo 13, Is Dead at 87
Ken Mattingly, who orbited the moon and commanded a pair of NASA shuttle missions, but who was remembered as well for the flight he didn’t make — the near-disastrous mission of Apollo 13 — died on Tuesday in Arlington, Va. He was 87.

His death was confirmed by Cheryl Warner, a NASA spokeswoman. She did not specify the cause or say whether he died at home in Arlington or in a hospital there.

Mr. Mattingly, a former Navy jet pilot with a degree in aeronautical engineering, joined NASA in 1966. But his first spaceflight didn’t come until April 1972, when the space agency launched Apollo 16, the next-to-last manned mission to the moon.
Played by Gary Sinise in the "Apollo 13" movie...

140 and a third innings out of the pen that year. And a 4.8 WAR for a reliever. Maybe that's not the MVP or Cy, but that's an all-time great relief season.

True. It was a different time. Justin Verlander won the Cy Young in 2022 - very, very deservedly - with 175 IP.

true, true. not saying it wasn't a great year and ok perhaps '92 Eck or that year ('87?) Steve Bedrosian won were worse (another thread?).

I figured that voters thought *someone* had to get both awards for Detroit's dominance that year (although Trammell...Whitaker...Gibson....). Still I remember Dwight Evans, Eddie Murray, Mattlingly, Hrbek maybe..? all having great seasons. the MVP was absurd even then (although who cares and i don't mean to detract from his death for real - i love that 1984 Tigers team)

...relievers were used so differently even in 1984 ... (wish i could remember whether "closer" was starting to be used, it was always "fireman" back then)
