A buddy of mine was saddened when Jimmy Carter initially entered hospice because it's cosmically unfair that scum like Kissinger would outlive a great man like Carter. So, at least there's that.

fking unreal.

i'll second that he was one of the worst humans alive, mostly that he kept getting away with literal mass murder under the guise of a funny accent (as a kid imitating his accent was somehow a common occurrence in our household - clearly son of a history teacher humour there)

No. This was before Pol Pot took over, and the USA wasn't allied with him. It was related to HK/Nixon's strategy to "win" the Vietnam war. But one could argue that the destabilization created by those actions set the stage for Pol Pot.

I've heard Kissinger described as a war criminal and one of the worst people ever for decades now and I still don't really know what he did. I guess his crimes were too recent for me to learn about them in school, but yet old enough that I wasn't following the news at the time. Soooo, other than bombing Cambodia (or more accurately, I assume he suggested to Nixon that we do that), what did he do that makes him so bad?

Supporting Pinochet's coup against Allenda in Chile in 1973 is a big one.

Spencer Ackerman's obituary in Rolling Stone (online) gives a good background.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Oh yeah, I guess I knew about Pinochet as well. Still, haven't we taken the wrong side in a million coups and rebellions? What makes Kissinger unique?

He also notably promoted US support for the military junta who ran and terrorized Argentina in the 70s.

I think in sum, his realpolitik, amoral pragmatism and strong influence lacked any moral values and only concerned itself with supporting US politics and/or business interest, regardless of the resulting body count. Surprising, coming from a guy whose family fled the Nazis when he was an adolescent.

Here you go from the late Christopher Hitchens. There's Iraq, there's Apartied in South Africa, there's Greece and Cyprus.
