The Undefeated

Maybe it's just that they front loaded, but it looks like it could be good. Halfway through the Waco Lynching story, and it's really good so far.

Replacing Jason Whitlock with Kevin Merida, an accomplished editor from the Washington Post, was definitely a massive upgrade for the project. I think it'll be good.

Looking forward to it. Lots of love for Merida on the interwebs today.

I forgot Whitlock was no longer involved, so assuming it will be better just by default.

Yeah, that's basically exactly how Whitlock described it to Simmons when it was first announced in 1998.

That is an atrocious article by Wilbon. ESPN should really have Amin Elhassan write a full piece in response as his comments in that article were spot on. Chris Herring, an excellent young African-American sportswriter who covers the Knicks for the Wall Street Journal and regularly uses advanced metrics in his articles, has also been posting some good responses on Twitter.

Love that one of his first example of an "advanced stat" is WHIP. Maybe a good start would have been tasking a writer who understands what advanced stats really are. "Oh, these kids today with the hippity-hoppity and their RBI and their ERA...."

Also not sure the world needed another piece about how most pro athletes don't know or care about advanced stats. That piece has already been done to death as well. That aspect of it isn't a black or white thing. It's not like the white pros in just about any pro sport are onboard either relative to black pros.

And I'm sure that Masai Ujiri has unexpectedly built the Raptors into one of the best NBA teams by solely relying on old school scouting and the eye test. Surely his success as a GM has nothing to do with analytics whatsoever.

I made it a few paragraphs, but I had to give up. It was ridiculous and I lost respect for Wilbon for it.

I did like the Waco Lynching article though. That was well-written and worth my time.

I remember when WHIP first blew my mind. It was in about 1986 when it appeared in the pitching matchups preview list/table under the standings and previous night's scores.

Must have been fun when Craig Biggio (285 career hbp) faced Randy Johnson (190 career hb).

RJ never hit him. Pedro Astacio (who I was always far too bullish on) was the leader with 7.

test_user has been pretty thoughtful as a PSU person on this subject.

I know a guy who went there, good friends with one of my BILs... He's a conservative, but relatively thoughtful, so we engage from time to time. He's the kind of guy that rips Hillary but I don't see much, if any, Trump praise.

I bring that up because of the cognitive dissonance it takes to be both a Trump supporter and an unabashed JoePa backer. I was tempted to send that guy this article, just to see how what I perceive to be an intelligent guy would respond to this article.

I've said this many times, though maybe not on this board. If it turned out that Bo turned his eye to, say, Gary Moeller being a pedophile, that school/program would be dead to me. It absolutely would crush me, and I really don't think I could get over it until/unless you pretty much bleached his name and presence from everything.

And if they held a day to honor him 50 years after his first game?

Fuck Penn State, man.
