FMD: Great movie, but I can't watch it again

Post by L-Jam3 »

Bringing it back.

As an offshoot from the dating thread, talking about great movies, but you're unable to watch it again.

For me, it's The Deer Hunter. Because I didn't know how it ended, it was a total gut punch. Maybe one of the last live-action movies where I legitimately wept watching.

This thread can become a Ringer podcast!

Anyhoo, I watched this for the first time recently (along with Born on the 4th of July) because I hadn't seen many Vietnam movies growing up and I agree. I'm good seeing it once.

But this goes for nearly all war movies for me. Half the time I just don't want to watch them. The other half I just don't want to watch them again.

For anything non-war, probably the Oscar nominated ones that I try to watch because while good, they don't have staying power for me. Like, I'm not going to watch Tar again. Or The Fabelmans.

Never seen The Deer Hunter. I do want to though. As mentioned in another thread, Schindler's List is a perfect example of this kind of movie. I bet a lot of people have seen it exactly once.

I know I've Schindler's List at least twice, once in the movies, and once on DVD. Not sure if I've rewatched it since.

And Ralph Fiennes is fucking amazing in that. One of the best personifications of pure evil I've ever seen.

Deer Hunter definitely. Saw it as a young teen when it opened. It's phemoenal, but no way I'm watching it again.

"To Kill A Mockingbird," "Sounder," just too much injustice.

I agree on Deer Hunter. And, in general I don’t like really long movies and have to really love a long film to rewatch it.

I've rewatched "Deer Hunter" and "Schindler's List" a few times. Both are really fantastic movies.

I thought the #1 answer for this is always "Requiem For A Dream".

In the same vein...I was going to say Trainspotting. Just gives me the icks.

I’ve rewatched the Deer Hunter many times. Honestly for me the POW scenes are harder to watch than the end. But total agree on Requiem For A Dream.

I saw The Handsmaids Tale (with Robert Duvall and Natasha Richardson) on a first date. That was rough...

I know that I've seen it all the way through, BUT I was trying to remember where it used to show up almost on an annual basis (or something) so that I've seen the movie, piecemeal, half a dozen times.

Maybe it was on heavy rotation on HBO back in the early days or something.

'In the company of men' was a hard watch on a date in a small cinema.

I would not want to watch that again, too many angry female faces in the cinema and being told to STFU when I laughed out loud a couple of times.

It was the dolphin call, right?

Children of Men. Haven't seen that since in the movies. Maybe I'm missing something other than it was bleak. One thing to rewatch are those single-shot scenes, specifically the escape in the car and the final sequence.

Hard to watch because it feels like a world that's not far away. (seen it twice though because it's very well made)

Ha! It was one of our first dates… can’t remember if it was the very first one. But we stayed together about a year or so. I took a different girl on a first date to Rambo: First Blood. That one didn’t take.

eta: in retrospect it make me remember the scene in Taxi Driver, where DeNiro’s character gets up the nerve to ask out Cybill Shepherd’s character, then takes her to an X-rated movie.

I got crap from my buddies in junior high for taking a girl to see Return of the Jedi on our first date. Apparently telling them it was her idea to see the movie wasn't good enough.

I don't dislike the movie but once was enough.

When I was working on the school paper, I got passes for the opening of Brian DePalma's "Body Double." Asked out a girl who I'd been getting friendly with, dinner and then the movie. An "erotic thriller" sounded intriguing...
