Re: Television (no longer temporary)
Anyone catch the first episode of "True Detective" (with Jodie Foster) last night?
Re: Television (no longer temporary)
I did. I agree with spoiler. But the whole thing for True Detective is freaky occult type detective story. And I forgive most anything that John Hawkes is in.DaveInSeattle wrote: ↑Mon Jan 15, 2024 5:11 pm Anyone catch the first episode of "True Detective" (with Jodie Foster) last night?

The lady who plays that character is a professional boxer (18-7-1 with 5 KOs). She identifies as native (unrecognized tribe) and from what I have wiki'd the character and her real life interests overlap.DaveInSeattle wrote: ↑Mon Jan 15, 2024 7:21 pmwlu_lax6 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 15, 2024 6:50 pmI did. A throwaway People magazine (online) article about Jeremy Allen White's Emmy win just spoiled the end of Barry for me.

When are we getting the GPJ episode of The Floor?

Re: Television (no longer temporary)
If I wanted to watch Doctor Who which season/version should I start with? From the very, very beginning?
There's the UK version that ran from 1963-1989 with 695 episodes and then in 2005 it was rebooted and has 15 seasons and 195 episodes (and counting).
This is one show that is completely in my cultural blind spot.
(And I may or may not want to watch because Magic: The Gathering has a crossover set with the brand.)

Re: Television (no longer temporary)
You can definitely pop into the 2005 Eccelston series and be ok. I had some general background knowledge from seeing some of the Baker Who as a kid and was fine. That still gives you a ton to watch. I only kept up through the end of Matt Smith’s run.
Going back to the real beginning seems like a lot of work.
Hopefully your uncle jlo sees this and weighs in.

Yeah, I don't think it matters, but I started in on the Baker era when I was a kid and I was fine.

I say you gotta go strict completist with this show.

They uncovered a few scrolls of the Talmud that references a Doctor Who in Aramaic.
If you're going to go completist, you need to start there.

Re: Television (no longer temporary)
I decided to finally watch True Detective, so I've watched the first couple of episodes of S1. Woody and (especially) McConaughey are great. But also, man, I was not totally aware of Alexandra Daddario's game. Holy shit.

She had been in a lot of stuff, but mostly 3rd actress or lower. That was her breakout... She's absolutely stunning.

She hasn't been showing them off in her recent work, so Sydney Sweeney has filled that void.

True Detective
Re: Television (no longer temporary)
Anybody watch The Traitors? It's a big backstabby social deduction reality TV show game hosted by Alan Cumming.
He chooses a couple of people to be traitors and then the games begin.
This season has former reality TV 'celebs' and also John Bercow. (Which apparently makes sense.)
We all know that guy:

Re: Television (no longer temporary)
The scene where she's in bed with her husband, right? I never looked at the scene in the same way as True Detective.

Re: Television (no longer temporary)
Endorse 100%. The background of the Timelords is clearly explained rather quickly with Eccleston and the effects are so dated on any of those older episodes that it looks like a satire.rass wrote: ↑Sat Jan 20, 2024 7:53 pm You can definitely pop into the 2005 Eccelston series and be ok. Cool cool. I happened to see there's a Doctor Who channel on Pluto TV and watched some of it. And you're right. Soooooo dated. Almost can't take the show seriously with how old it looked.Jerloma wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2024 7:33 pmEndorse 100%. John Stewart returning to the Daily Show. I've pretty much tuned the show out at this point... Probably will just pick up YouTube highlights, but happy he's back.

I saw an advertisement for A history of the world in six glasses. Looks pretty good. Thought maybe I’d watch it. But then I saw it is streaming on Fox Nation. No way in hell I’m downloading that channel. Oh well.

The book I'm guessing it's based on is pretty good.

i second the book! my late father-in-law got it for me a few years before he died and it took me a while to crack the spine but it's much more interesting than i'd initially given it credit for. good tribute to him on the shelf too
Re: Television (no longer temporary)
I finished S1. Worthy of all the hype. Great southern gothic noir. Oh, and I love that they picked The Handsome Family for the theme song. A coworker shared some CDs of them with me about 20 years ago and I loved them. I hadn't listened to them in a while, so I was thankful for the reminder.

Weird vibe with this episode and that skit encapsulates it well. The connection with the audience was just off all night. I think there's something about her delivery that doesn't quite work for improv... Too much time getting her lines out or something.

Even the monologue, especially when JT came out was weirdly flat... As was the Barry Gibbs Talk Show skit.
