the US missed a chance to pick a heel team. Koepka, Bryson, Reed, Phil etc... Phil vs Rory on Sunday would get peak ratings.

This, is not.

An amateur won the PGA tour event this week. Two thoughts on that. First, it probably says something about the watering down of the Tour. Second, does he get to announce he’s a pro on the spot so he can get the money? How does that work?
Re: A non-majors Golf Thread for 2023 and beyond
Well, the guy won the U.S. Amateur last year, so it’s not like he’s a schmuck who just got super lucky. Both Tiger and Jack have claimed they view their U.S. Amateur titles as being on par with winning a major. So I don’t think you can make any claims that this is due to watering down of the PGA Tour.
If I recall correctly, he can’t change his status mid-tournament, so he’s an amateur throughout the tournament. And since he’s the reigning Amateur winner, he gets entry into three of the majors but he’d lose that access if he turned pro.

He forfeits his guaranteed berth into the US Open if he turns pro, but would be in the PGA and the Masters since he won + all the signature events and he's in the Players regardless of his status.

Yeah it doesn’t say anything about how watered down the tour is. I mean maybe Abe Ancer would have won this week? But this is a US Amateur champ as a couple guys said. Dude can ball.

Just realized LIV scheduled an event in Las Vegas the weekend of the Super Bowl which seems idiotically on-brand for them.
ETA: think most ppl know but the Super Bowl is in Vegas this year so hotels etc are at a premium.

Until the addition of the 17th regular season NFL game, when the Super Bowl was in Glendale, it was always the same weekend as the Waste Management Open in Scottsdale (or whatever the Phoenix-adjacent party hard PGA event is/was called).

Re: A non-majors Golf Thread for 2023 and beyond
I am sure the deep pocket backers on the LIV are not worried about that. Instead they are thinking where will all of the big wig advertisers and sports brand people going to be. Plus all of the media members, radio row goof balls, etc. If you are looking to sell your product, it makes an easy way to engage.

Got to the course, had to decide left or right at a crossroads, buddy chose right. First player we see? Eldrick. Never been that close to him before. Watched him chip and putt on 8, then tee off on 9 and then walk within 10-12 feet.
Saw the LIV contingent (None of these guys looks as big in real life as in person) of Brooks, DJ, Gary Woodland, then Patrick reed came along, playing alone with his wife also inside the ropes following. That's a weird dynamic they have. For the record,Reed was very personable and joking with the other fans where he was chipping from, about 30 feet from us. But it' still weird.
Scott Van Pelt was walking with the Kopeka/DJ/Woodland group and then on our way out walked just past Marty Smith, but a group of bros started taking photos with him. Was going to say hello, but too many "HALLA" hats to penetrate.

Woodland is still in PGA.
You probably know this.
Are you going to the tournament?

Yeah, but he was playing with LIV guys on all sides. I only had tickets for yesterday's practice round, so no I won't be back I don't think. And to be honest I prefer to watch the real tournament on TV.
