So is this a case of "he's not a suspect in a crime, period" or "he's not a suspect in a crime...for now"? The article I read makes it sound like the former, but it seems like a lot of people have their fingers crossed for the latter.

Re: What The Hell Category Do You Put This In (FIGJAM)
if you bet 43 times and lose $143K, or 1 billion and lose 100 million, that's basically the juice.

Re: What The Hell Category Do You Put This In (FIGJAM)
Yeah was coming here to point that out. Of course, with enough bets you’re liable to end up close to 50 percent as the math works out either for you or against you depending on how you look at it.degenerasian wrote: ↑Thu Aug 10, 2023 10:04 am if you bet 43 times and lose $143K, or 1 billion and lose 100 million, that's basically the juice.
Put another way if you bet randomly 15,000 times that much volume would assume you getting fairly close to 50 percent. Winning only 45 percent of those would be a pretty bad beat, statistically.

Like if you're only doing point-spread game bets. Isn't Mickelson known for some big money longshot bets too?

I'm pretty sure FIGJAM would bet on anything at any time. Next car to pass is white? $5k. Next dog I see is part Chihuahua? $5k.
Any idea, any time, he'd be down for some action.
I could post some billy joel lyrics for context but eh.

Re: What The Hell Category Do You Put This In (FIGJAM)
For my caveat only applies to “50/50” bets, true. I was reacting only to the story which appeared to detail a lot of point spread type bets. If he really bet $1B, then I’m guessing Walters is just estimating his expected losses for that total which would be about $100M

Phil Mickelson makes wild (but believable) hole-in-one claim in LIV Golf media guide

Get the fuck out of here. Unless his local pitch and putt had one hole where the green is sloped into a downward cone and the flag is at the bottom.
My avatar corresponds on my place in the Swamp posting list with the all-time Home Run list. Number 45 is Paul Konerko with 439.

Re: What The Hell Category Do You Put This In (FIGJAM)
I don't find it all that absurd. Dude's been playing high level golf since 1990. So that's 32 years, not really including any time before college or so where he was obviously a pretty good golfer. Let's say on average he plays 18 hole (4 par threes per course on average) a day, six days a week for 30 weeks a month. That's 720 chances per year on par 3s (we'll exclude drivable par 4s for ease) just in what I'd term competition play. Add in practice rounds when you're at your home course and that number can easily get to 1,000 chances per year to make a hole in one.
And Phil's one of the best wedge/short iron players in the history of the game (remember he walked off a 100 yard pitch shot once when he had to hole it and barely missed) so we're looking at 32,000 chances or so on par 3s. That's a hole in one 0.14% of the time or around once every 340 rounds. I buy it.
Speaking to your last point, yes, the courses he plays regularly around home, he will have an even bigger advantage than at say, Baltusrol or Erin Hills.

How many does he have in competitions over his career? Or maybe he is really good at timing the windmill.

5 on the PGA tour. Record is 10. So 42 have come in some sort of tournament practice round (which I lumped in with main counts) or during regular practice/casual play. The Sybian wrote: ↑Wed Feb 07, 2024 8:36 am How many does he have in competitions over his career? Which makes it doubly bad that my BIL got a hole in one in his second ever round. He shoots about 120 when we play.
