The left hander. Terp legend and even after the UMD death sentence he had solid runs at JMU and Georgia State.

One of the all-time great characters in college basketball. Hell, in American sports overall. While he didn't always run the most ethical of programs (e.g. Herman Veal and the Bias fallout), he was a very good coach and he brought an excitement and humor that the ACC has lacked since he left.

The acc coaches of that generation were great. Cremins, Terry Holland, all 3 in research triangle.

I just read (listened to) Feinstein's book about K, Smith, and Jimmy V. It was a great read, especially since V and K joined the ACC right around the time I was getting into it (the Sampson years). There isn't a ton about Lefty in the book, but he does write about him some. There were a lot of big personalities in those days.

Kind of funny timing too that Bennett got his first Technical foul yesterday in 14 years. He got it for telling the ref to "call the fucking foul," but since he almost never swears, the refs T'd him up. Imagine having that same standard for K or Dreisell.

Feinstein wrote about him over the weekend and was on the radio (probably can find his radio stuff on 106.7 DC).

Or Knight.

Nice piece about Lefty by Dave McKenna at Defector.

That Defector piece was good. Hard to believe a coach who had 30 players drafted by the NBA never advanced a team past the sweet 16.

Yeah, that definitely affected his national reputation and lasting impact. In fairness, some of his best teams played in the days of only one bid and he was in the ACC when other great teams took those bids (e.g. NC State with David Thompson).
