He was in the freshman world history class I had my second year of teaching back in 2000. I’m 47 and he’s 38. I recognized his name from a instagram post and looked him up. Hasn’t really changed besides the aging.

This is going to sound stupid, but I never realized how close in age new teachers are to HS students. When I was in HS, a 23yo seemed so much older. But now the age difference seems negligible. Perfect example, a girl in my class had an older sister who was an interim teacher in our HS for part of a year. She was hot, and we all had crushes on her. Looking back, she was probably just 4 or 5 years older than us. Actually, their mother was an English teacher in our HS, and I'd venture more guys had a crush on the mother than the girl in my class. Cool girl, but somehow the looks passed her over.

Not really a brush of mine, but this seems to be the best place for this story.

Ramón Estévez was a struggling young actor. My wife's uncle, Robert Dale Martin was a New York casting director who befriended and mentored him in his early days. Ramon thought he'd get better luck in both acting and housing if he had an Anglo name. So, as a tribute, he took my wife's uncle's name, Martin, as his stage first name. And, his stage last name from Bishop Fulton Sheen. So, there's my wife's connection to Martin Sheen.

I only found out myself a couple years ago. There’s a video somewhere on the internet of Martin Sheen talking about Bonnie’s uncle. I met him once. He died of a heart attack in the 90s. Good guy. I’ll try to find that video. We’re in fairly close touch with his daughter.

So, Bonnie’s cousin (daughter of Robert Dale Martin) gave us a link to this excerpt of an interview Martin Sheen had with James Lipton on Inside the Actors’ Studio. Sheen discusses the origin of his stage name.

Well, I was going to wait until whenever he passes (assuming the Swamp makes it that long) for mine because it's a very big namedrop. I mentioned this connection to Brian in person, but it's been well over a decade since then, so I would be surprised if he remembers.

I know I read that about Martin Sheen at some point. I'm pretty sure I read it in the context of Charlie Sheen/Emilio Estevez being brothers and the origins of those names (or something)

I recently found out that a nice lady who lives a couple doors down from us is apparently a real big shot writer, director, creator in the video gaming world. I don’t know squat about this stuff but she has worked for Nintendo, Electronic Arts, and a few other companies I’ve never heard of. She’s all over the internet and has a Wiki page. Who knew?

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, to me, rivals Red Dead Redemption.

I liked the Uncharted movie they made a few years ago, and am hoping Dishonored gets the same treatment.

Pretty sure I knew this at some point, but just rediscovered that my father went to high school with Larry David. Larry was a year younger, doubt my father knew him as he probably would have mentioned it, and their school was huge.

So have played soccer with this German guy Daniel for some like 5 years. Great defender, fast, communicates, etc. I knew he worked at Audi because he often had new high end or recently released cars (etron for example). So this morning before the game we are taking and he mentions Audi is likely going to announce a new sponsorship with Inter Miami next week. He also mentioned he got invited to go to the Copa America final in Miami. So I ask, what do you do for Audi? Marketing? He responds, oh just sit in meetings and say Yes or no.

Ryan Crouser won the gold medal in the shot put in each of the last three Olympics (Paris, Rio, Tokyo). Today I learned that his mother and uncle are people I went to high school and junior high with. His uncle was a good pitcher on my little league team.
