Learned a new vocabulary word today.

“flip-floppers”

Basically, an idiot driver ie one who wears flip-flops.

Context was the truck stop went from like 50 open spots to 0 in no time flat and an old head was talking to another driver about trying to make sure to not get a spot where he’ll be blocked in the morning but a “flip-flopper”. Someone who doesn’t route plan, parks like an asshole because he ran out his clock and didn’t get somewhere with parking in time.

For some reason I had the Hawaiian Punch board game. The only thing I remember is that it came with playdough and a mold of a pineapple and a plastic Hawaiian Punch guy. When something happened, you got to use the plastic guy to smash your opponents playdough pineapple.

A bunch of questions have come to mind about the logistics and practicalities of your new job …

1. Do you have to pay for your own fuel, or does Knight cover that? Do you or Knight have special deals with certain companies?

I’ve noticed that Love’s is consistently 40 cents a gallon higher than Maverik for diesel – how do they make that work? Do they give discounted prices for certain trucking companies or drivers?

2. What kind of gas mileage does your truck get?

3. On these 80mph freeways out here, how fast do you tend to go? Does the company impose limits on driver speed, through governor or monitoring? Do you consider gas mileage in deciding how fast to drive?

4. How does the gearing work on your truck?

5. Do you have a backup camera? Do other semis?

6. Would you ever make deliveries to an individual retail store? I’m asking because last week when we were leaving Zion, we passed two Knight trucks heading the other way. As far as I know, trucks going that way have to turn around in Springdale. But it seems that there’s only small stores there.

7. Do you have a reliable source that you can consult to see where rest stops are? What is it?

8. Is there any place with fewer rest stops than Utah?

Haha. I’m taking a couple days off for March Madness and actually will have time to answer these questions later. They’re pretty good ones and ones I wish I had asked before I started this gig.

And I actually spend a lot of time in the SLC area as it turns out so you might end up having to pay out on that lunch.

In some people’s I guess yes. There’s a lot of married couples who are either team drivers or just women who just ride shotgun with their husbands.

That said I haven’t seen a lot of rocking trucks bc I mind my own business.
