We will see, but this fails the sniff test. Extortionists rarely hire a lawyer to write and deliver the extortion demand. I will bet 1) this is harassment of the whistleblower, which has become routine in 21st century america, and 2) this FBI investigation will quietly disappear with little further comment.

So, Rutgers hired a new AD. Julie Hermann, longtime assistant to the AD at Louisville, former volleyball coach at Tennessee.

Sixteen years ago, members of the University of Tennessee women's volleyball team gathered for a last meeting with their head coach, Julie Hermann. In gym shorts or jeans, some piled onto a black leather couch. Others sat on the floor, cross-legged, almost breathless.

Many of them remember Hermann standing over them, as she had at hundreds of practices and matches. For several minutes, as the players recall, she said nothing.

The players say everyone, including the athletic director, had been brought together by a letter all 15 players on the team had submitted. In it, the players said, their coach had ruled through humiliation, fear and emotional abuse.

"The mental cruelty that we as a team have suffered is unbearable," the players wrote. Specifically, they said the coach had called them "whores, alcoholics and learning disabled."

In blunt terms, the players wrote, "It has been unanimously decided that this is an irreconcilable issue."

Hermann, the players say, absorbed the words, turned to her team, and said simply: "I choose not to coach you guys."

At that, say the players, she turned and left the room. Her coaching days were over, and many players say they never saw her again, though she briefly moved into athletic administration on the Knoxville campus.

Then, 11 days ago, Hermann, assistant to the Louisville athletic director for 16 years, was introduced as the new athletic director for Rutgers.

She held a conference call yesterday, and pretty much went all in:

This, this story about student athletes ... it’s the first I've ever heard of it. I never heard of a letter. My understanding is my boss never heard of a letter. And I was never told – I’ve never been – I’ve never heard former student athletes make these accusations.

Yeah. Definitely. I think the fallout from all this will end up being that that

1) The big conferences make their own entity and do away with their affiliation with the ncaa

or

2) The NCAA gives in and lets athletes start making money from autographs (probably a cap on $/signature or total they can make a year) and jerseys. Let's face it, no one but the family of the #62 right guard at Podunk U wants that shirt. Any given year there are probably 3-4 players per team whose jersey gets sold with any kind of volume.

All Bilas did was point out a known and obvious feature on the Shop NCAA site. Good for him, mind you, for doing so in a way in which it will garner much attention.

Ask yourself this. What if it were your name on the jersey? Would you be cool with the University Of The Swamp selling your name without handing you a penny?

Back when I went to them there colleges, the university newspaper was composed entirely of volunteer material; nobody was paid to write the articles or op-eds or to draw cartoons. So how would you feel if you published an article in your college paper (let's call it "Evolutionary Tendency Dynamics Of The Inside Joke On An Internet Forum") and then the college sold your article to, oh, The Washington Post for a few thousand bucks; you did all of the work but you don't get a penny. That sit well with you?

Here's another question. Do you think Manziel is making a statement to the NCAA? Or is he just one of thousands of guys who played NCAA football and ignored (or didn't comprehend) their rules? Or just didn't (somehow) think he'd get caught?

I think in Manziel's case, he just thought he wouldn't be caught. he trusted people he should not have trusted. Easy mistake to make when you are surrounded by people you shouldn't trust, I suppose. He knew the rules. Everyone here knows the rules (at least the major ones about not taking money for anything) and we don't have a compliance officer to make sure.

He's got an ego. Not A-rodian in magnitude, but he got a lot thrown at him very quickly and he used poor judgement (allegedly) as 20 year old men are wont to do.

Moving forward, the NCAA online shop will no longer offer college and university merchandise. In the coming days, the store’s website will be shut down temporarily and reopen in a few weeks as a marketplace for NCAA championship merchandise only. After becoming aware of issues with the site, we determined the core function of the NCAA.com fan shop should not be to offer merchandise licensed by our member schools.

It's a team punishment, not NCAA so it isn't the last word on this whole affair. The suspension could be for just about anything really. Might be for missed practices or who knows what?

As football season approaches, I find myself looking forward to watching some college ball, whereas last year at this time I had zero interest.

I think the difference is that last year was a Penn State scandal - where real innocents were badly, badly hurt by an institutional cover up.

And this year? I realize that I no longer give a rat's ass about the NCAA exploiting players, or players signing autographs for money or universities that I have no affiliation with cutting back on academics in order to fund stadiums (etc. etc.)

Let the games begin, and when the whole NCAA syatem collapses, I'll still watch whatever is left - maybe it will be the ESPNCAA...

The Jameis Winston stuff is going to be ugly. DNA Evidence apparently matches Winston.

This is the most damning thing to me, or if not damning, the most disturbing:

A statement released earlier Wednesday by the accuser's family through her attorney, Patricia Carroll of Tampa, said Tallahassee police warned the accuser not to pursue the case, saying Det. Scott Angulo told Carroll, "Tallahassee was a big football town and the victim needs to think long and hard before proceeding against him because she will be raked over the coals and her life will be made miserable."

It's a sad reality though and would probably be true in any college town where their main sport was involved.

I'm peripherally following this. What the police officer said sounds like honest, good advice. I'll wait for someone to counter the truth of that statement.

I wonder why so long to decide whether or not to charge? What are they waiting for?

ETA: Sounds like a detective made this statement to an attorney for the victim. According to that same attorney. So, there is that.

Many headlines give other impressions. like this was an official police department statement. Or that it was made directly to the victim.

Yeah, I don't dispute that it's a factor, but it's a decidedly unfortunate one. And I think that should be left for the attorney/plaintiff to decide and not advice from the police officer. Seems like it's a threat.
