Flames are absolutely horrible, dead last.
I just sold my tickets to the next two home games, Detroit and Nashville.
With this cash I can go get a hooker, at least she would show more effort.

At the start of the season, if you would've told me Chris Kunitz would be a top three scorer midway through this season, I would've asked you to sell me some of the drugs you're taking.

Re: Another Temporary Twothousandthirteen NHL Thread
Jets fans chant "Lets Go Blue Jays" at leafs last night. I liked that. Very few things are more enjoyable than a home win over Toronto, but one of them might be a road win over Toronto (saturday night) that bumps them out of a playoff spot.
Nothing has been funnier this year then watching the canadian media blow loads over the leafs, for the second year in a row, only to watch them fall apart in the second half and act totally flabbergasted.
I think TOR-NJ-WIN-PHI are going to be battling for the last 2 spots right to the end, which should at least make the five April games that I have tickets to interesting.

Wow. Quite sensible. Weird what they did with Florida, but I guess going to Boston and NYI over Carolina and Columbus doesn't add too much of a travel burden.

Oh, hold on a sec...they just made the NHL unbalanced? It wasn't before? I had just assumed it was.
Didn't baseball revamp their entire format to get away from that which the NHL is going to switch into?

Yes it's unbalanced and it's unbalanced with more teams in the East which is surprising.
If I were to read between the lines, Phoenix isn't going anywhere, Seattle (Division A) and Kansas City (Division B) are getting expansion teams within 2 years and Quebec City is SOL.

I think imbalance is a bigger issue with divisions than conferences.Grasspenis wrote:Oh, hold on a sec...they just made the NHL unbalanced? It wasn't before? I had just assumed it was.

The NHL has 30 teams. With six divisions of five teams each, every division was balanced.
But with 4 divisions, something has to give, and it makes more sense to have equal divisions within conferences than unequal divisions and unequal conferences.
With baseball, was the Astros move really about evening up the NL and AL, or about the imbalance with the 4-team AL West and the 6-team NL Central?
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

From a pure geographical standpoint, it looks good.

I haven't seen the specifics on the final proposal, but wasn't there talk of the playoffs not being unbalanced? Essentially, there could be more playoff qualifiers from one conference than the other?Steve of phpBB wrote:I think imbalance is a bigger issue with divisions than conferences.Grasspenis wrote:Oh, hold on a sec...they just made the NHL unbalanced? No crossover of conferences, 8 playoff teams each.
But there could be 5 playoff teams from one division and 3 from the other.

I know we're being rather specific with the conditions here, but I'm still surprised this is the case:

I suppose as a practical matter, I should be glad the Hawks will be in the same division as Colorado.

They are rather suave, aren't they? Gorgeous unis. The WHL Vancouver Giants wore them one night (the old Vancouver Millionaires threads); Bob Andrechuk and I were there. He bought a jersey, I believe, and I merely picked up a hat. Pretty sure I posted those pics on an older Swamp. Anyway, infinitely superior to the VANCOUVER jerseys and the whale giving birth.normalasian wrote:anyone watching HNIC right now? Those Vancouver uniforms are pretty cool.

Re: Another Temporary Twothousandthirteen NHL Thread
Grantland has a humorous article, by DownGoesBrown, called The NHL Misery Watch, with short sections on every NHL team, listing what's gone wrong, and why you should still be happy. With apologies to TTB and Zaz, the Flyer entry is particularly funny:
Philadelphia Flyers
What’s gone wrong: [Takes deep breath … ] The Flyers are stuck in 11th place in the East, their coach is on the hot seat, their “best player in the world” has been merely good, they traded one of the league’s top 10 goal scorers, they reacquired a former player from the Kings but not one of the good ones, their best player just basically retired, and the backup goaltender they exiled to Columbus is playing way better than their $51 million starter. Oh, and they’re the only team in the league that’s over the cap. In other words, everything.
Why that should make you happy: Because at some point in your life, you have presumably met a Philadelphia Flyers fan.

I saw Dan Currie do that once. Early 90's. It was an AHL game, Binghamton Rangers at the Cape Breton Oilers. Except Currie was the last guy back on a 2-on-one; he skated in front of one of the two Rangers on his way to the bench, crossed the guy's path, giving up a 2-on-zero breakaway. They scored. Currie didn't care. He hated everyone in the world. Great Junior player but his horrific attitude cost him an NHL career.kranepool wrote:That Kostitsyn play is indescribable.

Great sequence for the Pens. Just as they kill off a (questionable-ish) double minor against Cooke, they get an odd man rush (including Cooke) and score. Killer.

This clip is not about the bad call. It's about how much a fucking moron Pierre McGuire is
" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Right away
"It's a high stick, Dave Jackson with the right call"
How do you know? You're between the benches 100 feet away? You just want to sound smart that you know what a ref waving off a goal means.
Then:
"You know what? It's the hand of Heatley (while jumping all over top of Olcyzk). That'll be Tootoo goal!"
That's still pretty inconclusive. So after you suck the refs dick for making the absolute correct call that you didn't see, now you're sure that it'll be a goal when the replay is pretty inconclusive. By the end of it, Olyczk still wasn't sure.
The goal didn't count. And furthermore, the play isn't fucking reviewable so how can the call be reversed? The play cannot be reviewable because it was Miller's high stick and Tootoo's goal. Review can only occur for direct goals, not passes to teammates. So once Tootoo touches that puck, the play is dead.
So suck it McGuire, you don't know shit yet you think you're a genius.

I checked hockey scores on my phone just now and saw that Martin Brodeur had scored an unassisted, first period goal tonight. I thought, "That can't be right", but yes, he did get technical credit for this goal.
