I think it's maybe 10% about policy. The rest is political survival and staying attached to power. They're just scared to go against him because the party will abandon them like it did Romney, Liz Cheney and the very rare others who've spoken out against Trump.

That’s how it used to be, sure. But just as the rich and powerful did in 1930s Germany, they’ve lost most of their control. Many of the not-massively-rich-but-comfortably well off have left the GOP.

Either way, the people who are still GOP are united in their opposition to liberalism. For the rich it’s primarily about taxes and wealth. For the masses it’s mostly loss of white/straight/“Christian” primacy. MAGA. For some it’s both.

When it comes down to election time, none of these people will support Biden.

Yeah. Damn. According to all the podcasts I listen to, very few convictions of similar crimes get prison time, but Trump’s case is off the charts. A normal person would get 4 years, but I can’t see Trump getting time. Even if he does, it’ll get appealed and that’ll drag on past the election. I just want to see if Secret Service goes in with him. Serving a felony should mean losing SS protection.

He's still the nominee and it will still be a close election. There is enough "this was a sham trial" people out there to keep him going. At the end of the day, it means nothing in terms of the election. Very few are changing their vote because of this. I would make the argument that as many people that say they won't vote for him because he is a convicted felon equals the number that will vote for him because they think it was a victimless crime or whatever term you want to use (like when Martha Stewart went to jail for insider trading).
