It says a lot about Pavement that most of their unreleased songs and B sides are as good as the album cuts. (And as stated their first gold record is a B side)

Well, i started by listening to their first 3 albums entirely, got the gist of their sound, and then just kind of shuffled the 'This is Pavement' playlist on Spotify (and now the algorithm is working them into my daily listening). So that's the extent of my opinion basis, which is: they don't really fill a 'need' in my music catalog since so many other bands share/ape the sound. However, they do have some enjoyable tracks that will get some repeat, and I may re-dive in at some point. Nice to fill that gap in my knowledge though and definitely appreciate their influence.

It’s funny, I was vaguely aware of the name in college or thereabouts, seeing their logo around. I pegged them as more of a punk or harder band, no idea why. I listened to a bunch of their songs on Spotify, and knew Spit on a Stranger. Nothing else sounded familiar. I liked it, but not enough to continue a deeper dive.

I get the sense that the standard for “similar age” is more demanding when it comes to music than anything else.

Or maybe if I had a college friend into Pavement, maybe I would have listened in my prime music years and would have loved them and still loved them today. It takes a tremendous amount these days for any music to break through enough for me to seek it out again.

That’s part of it, but for me (and I think most people), music really imprinted deep between the ages of 16 - 22. My favorites then are still my favorites now, and it just MEANT something to me. Now it’s “I like that song,” and that’s about it. I do feel there was a sense of pride in ownership of music I purchased. I just feel less connected to something I play on Spotify than I do to something on iTunes.

I think a big part of how music can stay fresh and relevant for me is Twitter. Between the fans and the up and coming artists who actively communicate with the fans, it's really helped me keep that feeling y'all are describing. Of course, I never lost it and admit I'm in the minority when it comes to that.

I don’t disagree. But I will say that personally, when I find a couple/few songs I really like by an artist, I use Spotify to completely immerse myself into that artist. Would’ve been harder to do that in the old days (or at least a lot more expensive).

I was certainly late to the party for streaming music, but I’m now a happy camper.

Good point. I've done this with a bunch of groups/artists, especially when i listen to a playlist and new (to me) songs come up that I like, I'll go back and listen to more. My problem, I forget the names and if it's been too long, I don't see them in my previously played lists. also doesn't help that my daughter uses my account, so her crap gums up the works. My son has his own account, and I ain't paying for 3.

Timely conversation. I just had dinner with a buddy of mine that was a coworker for nearly 10 years. He was always into music and he introduced me to a lot of bands. I brought up Pavement to him last night, because it's a band I would have thought he'd have been into, but he said they just never did it for him. He loves the Pixies and Dinosaur Jr, so it's kind of odd to me, but that's how music is.

As for influences, I'm glad I worked with him when I did - late 20s through late 30s. And I had a similar supplier of CDs at my previous company. They both got me out of my music-listening rut and I've had a wider knowledge and appreciation ever since.

Cheat Codes - by Blackthought and Danger Mouse. This is one of my favorite hip-hop albums of all-time and it came out two years ago. I've recommended it to hip-hop fans, from casual to hardcore. No one has done anything but praise the hell out of it when they listen.

Thanks, gave it a listen this morning and love it. I’d rate myself on the low end of casual hip hop fan, but this is great. I listened to a bunch of Danger Mouse stuff on Spotify after listening to Rome, and the MF Doom feature on this album (Belize) pops up a lot.

Pretty sure I found Rome through Bapo!, and it’s one of my favorite albums. It’s made to sound like the soundtrack of a Spaghetti Western featuring Jack White and Nora Jones. Hauntingly beautiful, highly recommend.

Only incrementally better. The indie sound is full band driven, not just the lead singer, so the name should reflect a collective.

Apparently he's Jake Lenderman, not MJ, but I hear you. And you should hear that album. It's by far my favorite LP of the year.
