I just ordered six cubic yards of soil mix so I can build a new flower bed in my front yard next week.

Anyone want to come help dig out some sod, spread six yards of soil and then plant a bunch of coneflowers and catmint? I'll buy you a beer.

Jeez. I would come help out. But I just started a new book, and there’s playoff hockey on tv…

Other than the sod part, the rest sounds great tbh.

We have to be very careful what we plant in our front yard because deer eat everything. I just put together a raised, metal garden bed out back (fenced in) and my wife filled it with lettuce, herbs, tomatoes and squash. I layered the bottom with some rotting firewood I forgot I'd stacked and twigs, which I was told helps keep the soil full of nutrients.

I didn't do that last time (the wooden one we had disintegrated over the winter) so I'm curious to see how this batch goes.

That helps with drainage too, right? It holds enough in to help out on a daily basis in addition to normal watering, but lets a lot of the overflow or excess for too heavy a rain get through without drowning.

That's what YouTube told me, in the aggregate. I had to watch a bunch of videos, because a lot of them were for much larger ones that were not raised. So a lot of those you want to be much deeper and with a lot more wood/branches/etc to deal with the direct access/connection with the ground.
