I've done some horse research this year and my favorite horsebets this year are the following:

Rodriguez (12:1)

Pros: He apparently is very good at horse racing, and like "professional" or whatever by horse standards. Like he knows that he's racing other horses and trying to beat them and isn't horsenervous and stuff. He does not have ice in his veins (if so he would die) but the idiom does apply to this caballo. I'm probably saying the dumbest things here but the horsepeople on the racing sites seem to love this horse and they say he just has it. They somehow remind him of another horse, too. Great.

Also I think he's the fastest horse in the field, from what I can find.

Cons: Very young (born on May 20th). Most champion horses are born in either February or March, and in this field most of the favorites are early Febuary foals. FEBRUARY FOALS CLUB WHAT UPPPP. As these horses are only three (in Rodriguez'z case, two), the older horses have lived almost 10% more horselife. Less than ten Derby winning horses have been May births and only 3 that I can find were younger than Rodriguez (Thunder Gulch in 1995, Northern Dancer in 1964, and Exterminator in 1918). None have been born in June or later. This matters.

Also, there's a non-zero chance that he accidentally gets deported.

Luxor Cafe (15:1)

Pros: Great bloodlines, the son of American Pharoah and has the aforementioned canuck Northern Dancer in his lineage on horsemom's side.

Cons: Just about everything else. He's Japanese somehow, which matters for surely racing reasons to the almost certainly unprejudiced folks who tend to frequent horse forums. And he's also kind of slow. By horseracing standards that is, he'd absolutely smoke me and you. I'm listing them by order of odds, but this is easily my last choice of the three I'm taking.

(Edit: Fusaichi Pegasus was also Japanese, so I don't know why people care so much)

East Avenue (20:1)

Pros: The horsefolk say he's the fastest horse this year. Cool. Also like the long odds if he does indeed win this horseshit.

Cons: Is a dumb horse, according to the horsefolk. The kind of horse that sees a shiny object and forgets that he's racing for millions of real, actual United States dollars. (Luxor Cafe has no idea what a United States dollar is). This is a bet that he somehow ignores squirrels for two minutes and brings it home. The anti-Rodriguez, also probably named after a seedy part of town.

If East Avenue ignores squirrels for exactly 2 minutes, I really like his chances, just to stick it to the Norther Dancer club.

Only two horses have ever run sub 2 in the Derby, Monarchos in 2001 (Year after fusaichi pegasus won) and some horse named for an old style of desk or something. Nothern dancer did it in 2 flat.

Chunk Of Gold has a CMU connection (the jockey, not the name though that applies as well) so I have a rooting interest!
