This country is so fucked up.

There is an impending coup and renewed escalation in Iraq; the Gaza-Israel war; the Ukraine civil war that would shock no one if Russia invaded or someone set off a nuke.

And network news interrupts normal programming because a movie star died. What the fuck, and how fucking stupid and insipid we have become. Ok, the Queen of England, or an ex-president. But a fucking movie star.

Television network news is 100% worthless and a horrible horrible joke. We are the fucking punch line.

(And Jeopardy! is a rerun. A good rerun, the Chuck Forrest first round of the 80s decade tourney, but just a rerun. So that ain't why I'm so wound up.)

Wow. That really sucks. Back in the 70s and 80s when he was on top of his game, there really wasn't anyone better. Like Howard, I remember his standup (but not before Mork and Mindy) and he was incredible. Just an amazing ball of energy. He was a great Tonight Show and Late Night guest as well.

He did a lot of crap late in his career, but he had a pretty nice peak.

Very sad. He was soooo funny back at his peak. Mork, standup, Doubtfire, GMV. Also echo LJam's comments on Garp. Loved him in his serious roles like GWH and Dead Poets too.

A small but significant percentage of people after bypass develop severe depression and other mental impairments. Seems to happen more often with aortic valve surgery (or it did last time I looked at the data, which is at least 15 years ago.)

Here is an article by one patient who suffered 'pumphead' impairments after surgery. I have no idea if Williams suffered from this phenomenon.

Threadjack - A friend of mine just had aortic valve surgery. Flew up to NY Presbyterian for it. He either had one more or one less valve than he needed. Sounds like he's doing OK.

Look forward to reading that. It's always interesting hearing other people's thoughts and experiences, helps me sort out my own shit or gives me insights into myself. I also find it extremely helpful to write about it. I find it nearly impossible to talk about, which is why I dump shit here from time to time. It took me 7 or 8 years to finally seek help, and looking back it is amazing how difficult it was to do such a simple task as picking up the phone and calling for an appointment. I took psych 101 in college almost solely to figure out what was wrong with me, loved psych courses so much I took it up as a second major almost as a hobby. It took another 3 or 4 years or so to be able to even admit my depression to anyone else. Nobody has ever had a bad response, and I know the stigma is gone (for the most part) in society (thanks, Tipper!), but I still feel shame and fear of people I know finding out.

Fascinating article. Had no idea. It shouldn't be surprising that having your heart stopped and artificially reoxygenating your blood in a machine and pumping it back into you can have effects on the brain. Freaky shit, stopping your heart with potassium and lowering body temp to 77 degrees. Whoever thought of that is a genius, but I can't imagine trying the technique for the first time. How do they get the heart going again?

Yeah, he always tried so hard that he could easily be annoying when he wasn't on point or you weren't in the mood for him. I definitely get why a lot of people may not have liked his work - although I bet many of those never saw his standup.

I think partly why this hit so hard is that he was always so cheerful and he did his thing for so long. It's not unusual for manic/depressive types to burn out early, particularly when they hit a certain level of fame (e.g. Kurt Cobain). But Williams was a superstar for nearly 40 years. You'd think he must have figured out a ton of different, effective coping mechanisms.

But I guess not - and that's fucking scary.
