College Football August/September 2014

You know what, it's time!

Pretty excited about UK this year. Not that I think they will go to a bowl game, but I am interested to see the improvement with two years under Stoops's system. Defense is apparently ahead of the offense at this point, but I'd rather have that right now. Hopefully the QB situation will be better than last year when we had no good option there.

And looking forward to week 2 when I welcome Pius and Sabo to town. Come get your whoopin

!
Hold on, I'm trying to see if Jack London ever gets this fire built or not.

Any chance you'll be in Mt. Pleasant on Oct. 4 for the OU-CMU game? There's a chance I might be going to that game (assuming I can talk Mrs. Sabo into it).

Incredibly unlikely. If all goes well, I will be recovering from brain surgery 4 days prior. (If it doesn't go well, well....)

But if you want some recommendations on hotels, restaurants, etc. let me know.

Shame they don't play this natural rivalry game earlier in the season. Geez, didn't even wait until September this year.

A small aside/mini rant that crops up frequently in the context of a racist authority figure. The complaint that, 'he never brought it up to me.'

That ain't part of the job description, or the responsibility of the victim of racism. Usually it is a direct result of the racism, to not want to confront the racist authority. Many many times the victim did bring it up, but was rebuffed.

You don't like the way your racism is exposed? Too fucking bad; don't be racist.

(I have no idea the legitimacy of Brown's charge; that ain't the point I make.)

For some unknown reason, one of the Canadian sports networks broadcast Wake Forest-Louisiana Monroe tonight.

That is some low grade football right there.

Thanks. I'll let you know. Mrs. Sabo and I are considering going to Traverse City and the upper peninsula for the week following the game, so hitting the OU-CMU game is a possibility.

Good luck with the surgery!

As someone who barely follows the college game anymore, I can't believe Bo Pelini actually exists. Every time I see him, I think I've stumbled across some dopey comedy where Peter Stormare plays a stereotypically over-the-top football coach.

UVA gave up three, THREE!, defensive touchdowns in the second quarter against UCLA today. They ended up losing just 28-20. Since the cavs won only two games all last year and they were supposed to lose by over three touchdowns today, I'm going to take this game as a positive. I thought UVA's defense had a chance to be quite good and they looked it today. Their d line dominated the Bruins and their secondary allowed very few long passes. If UVA can figure out a little offense they might actually be decent this year.

Former East Carolina head coach Steve Logan is a regular guest (and occasional host) on local sports radio and TV and he's fantastic. He's funny, knowledgeable and charismatic. Here he is breaking down the 4-2-5 defense and how to attack it.

Kenney Chesney ( SC alum) produced a docu-drama-bio about the man, Steve Spurrier, who single handidly ruined college football with spread formations. (ha, I said it)

I just realized, Spurrier has coached thousands of football players over his career and during the docu-drama only a couple "testified" to his greatness and only about ten were shown.

I don't normally root for Virginia Tech, but well I did tonight. Huge win.

Brian, maybe the ACC isn't all garbage after all. Granted, the Big 10 had a bad day, so that may devalue the win, but still.

Virginia Tech runs much different defenses and complexes if Miller is playing. And the Buckeyes had a chance to tie on the final possession with three turnovers and two missed field goals.

I'm not apologizing for them by any means; but it's conceivable to think if Miller was playing that this game is a win.

That was going to be my guess. The non-rivalry that wants to be a rivalry.
