My parents never locked theirs up and I remember the first time I got drunk was off straight Kaluha when I was 15. It was an awful awful hangover. My parents returned home the next day to a driveway full of cigarettes and a six pack of Coors in the freezer. My dad took the fall for us when my mom asked whose it was. Always thought that was cool.

What were the odds on me being the responsible one when it comes to locking up the cabinet. Just goes to show you that the Bay Area is inferior to Lexington, once again.

My parents - especially my father - drank fairly regularly, but were almost never drunk.

Big open liquor cabinet, and from the age of 17, if we wanted to take their booze, we knew to pay them for it.

One time, I grabbed a bottle of scotch from the back and left $20. Turned out it was a bottle of "Ne Plus Ultra" a very expensive blend made by Dewars that was given to my folks the day my sister was born. It was a gift from a friend who had since passed away. They were saving it for her wedding (which, considering that she was 14 at the time was still a ways off).

They weren't pleased that this rare, heirloom scotch was pounded back by a bunch of goofballs at a house party.

I did my share of drinking, but I don't think I ever took any of my parents' booze. (Of course there wasn't much in the house ever, so that helped I guess.)

My problem was that my sister was 3 years older, and drank then watered down all the bottles. My parents very rarely drink, and pretty much never at home, so they probably still have the same bottles in the house. If you looked closely, you could see the pencil marks my sister left on all the bottles.

He would let my friends and me drink beer in our house during high school, if their parents were ok with it. When I was 15, a couple of my friends and I were actually busted by the cops for underage drinking. I was suspended from the wrestling team at one point for getting caught drinking. My mum was mortified, but my dad laughed out loud.

The issue got real and a hell of a lot less funny in adulthood when both of my two brothers became alcoholics and one brother (the one who didn't die from drugs) accused my parents for being complicit in their problems for letting them have access to alcohol. I disagree and I defended the old man publicly. I hate the idea of blaming ones parents for ones own failings. But, I do see where my bro is coming from...

My Dad had the mistaken belief that if he let us try alcohol, the mystique and forbidden fruit temptation would decrease. Nope, the love of getting drunk took over. I don't disagree with his decision to let us take a sip of his drinks at a fairly young age, and I will probably do the same. I think giving a 12 yo a sip of a strong beer or scotch will turn them off of booze. I do want them to see alcohol as a pairing to a good meal, or a savored night cap. The Europeans play this right, give kids a glass of wine with dinner as adolescents, and binge drinking is a much smaller problem.

yeah here Canada we don't get any news once the polls close somewhere. In the past it used to be all polls closed a 8pm local. In a country of 5 timezones if you're in Vancouver that's 4 and a half hours of Coronation Street or something. Since that was stupid they have reduced it to 3 different close times.

Last election I believe it was:
Atlantic and NF at 9 and 9:30 local respectively
The big chuck of AB, SK, MB, ON and QC at 9pm ET (7pm in AB)
And BC at 7pm local.

This way the main coverage is during the big chunk which makes for better entertainment as results come pouring in.

David Cameron To Scottish People: ‘I’ll Kill Myself If You Leave’
Image
LONDON—In an emotional public address this morning ahead of Thursday’s national referendum in Scotland, U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron pleaded with the Scottish people to stay and vowed that he would take his own life if the territory votes in favor of independence. “Scotland, the second you leave I will kill myself—I swear I’ll do it,” said a visibly disheveled Cameron, who spoke with a shaking voice and appeared at several points during the speech as if he was on the verge of breaking down in tears. “How can I go on living if you’re gone? If you vote yes to independence, that’s it—you can say goodbye to me right now, because I’ll be dead the next time you see me. Just look at what you’re doing to me!” At press time, Cameron was seen sobbing softly and climbing up the stairs to the top of Parliament’s Elizabeth Tower.

So... polls are closing around now, yes? When are they gonna have an answer to announce.

You'd think in a couple of hours, right? I mean, talk about the simplest ballot of all time.

(I'm being willfully ignorant here, as I have no idea if this is the only thing on the ballot, nor do I even know when the polls close or how they tabulate results.)

They say the bulk of the results will come back at 3am Scottish time but some of the early results may give a good indication.

Counting 4 million votes by hands takes a while.

they're up 38991 to 26902. Yes that's only 63000 out of 3.5 million votes but these trends are very difficult to change.

Well, now it is on. 50.9-49.1, no barely leading, 6k difference of about 350k. 90% of the vote yet to be counted.

Six of the seven councils voted no. One of the seven, Dundee City, nearly eclipsed the difference. Total of 32 councils. Big cities will report last. Cue Harvey Keitel for the no camp--gonna take all night.

God I love elections. Don't know how I'm gonna be able to stay away in 2016.

The English are a bunch of cunts. Any opportunity to get away from the UK government is a chance to remove ones nation from a ruling class that has been a mirror of the evils of their big brother, the USA, in terms of world wide war and misery, and ruination of the middle and working classes at home. Thatcher--Blair--Cameron--their rule speaks for itself.

Con--scary scary threats of horrible horrors if you vote yes. That is what their argument boiled down to.

No pulling out now, opened up a significant lead. 670K to 521K, roughly 30 % of the vote reported. Glasgow to report in ten minutes. That largest city may seal it.

Not enough of a margin to swing it for Yes. No still leads by 200K, and they will almost certainly prevail. Rule Brittania, gassy beer and Page Three.

The poor always want change, be it a simple government change, communism or independence. The rich always want the status quo. It's the people in the middle who determine the result and I think A) they are stable enough in the union and B) the threat of losing the currency really spooked a lot of people.
