Jeeves knows you guys travel...

Post by BSF21 »

Cross from Facebookland because I'm impatient and want to get something on order...

Any guys out there have a go-to weekender/duffel bag they really like? I need something I can keep packed for quick trips where I don't want to drag out my full carry-on luggage. Thinking canvas/leather/combo. Anyone a fan of a particular brand/style and can point me in the right direction? I don't want to end up with crap.

How big are you looking for? I have a small one I like that fits Spirit's personal item measurements so I don't have to check luggage that I got on Groupon for like $20 and then a Samsonite that I got at Marshall's that counts as a carry-on on other airlines.

Just go to Marshall's or TJ Maxx and you can probably get something decent for like fitty billz

Timbuk2 has some dope messenger bags that can double as weekenders in the bigger sizes. My first one was so nice some dude in DE broke my car window and stole it (and a laptop and phone and other shit).

I'd like it to be canvas or leather or some combo. Of good quality with no mechanics (no wheels, not a carryon, no foldy handles). Mostly something that would hold a couple pair of jeans and shirts, another pair of shoes, a shaving bag, etc. Something sturdy and will last for a few years, preferably around 100$ give or take.

Amazon seems to have a good selection of them. This one looks right up your alley:

I just bought a Patagonia bag on my trip to Boston, and it's sturdy as fuck. This one costs $119, and it's pretty big. Probably too big for carry on if it's full. They have a smaller version of the same line, "Black Hole Duffel". Mine is a 60L, the 45L is $99. I bought mine thinking that I have three kids, and I might be able to fit our stuff in there. My wife's stuff will need its own bag.

Yea. Seems like a quality company. Maybe throw this one in the mix?

If you're a Costco member, check out their site or go to a store. I bought a Ricardo roller bag from them and it's been excellent. I've used it for the last three or four years and it's still in decent shape. Mine is a full-size roller bag, but I saw smaller carry-on-sized bags when I was there earlier this week.

T I M B U K2

can't go wrong.

my standard carry-on is a one of their backpacks -- couple of front pockets, big pocket and separate laptop pocket. padded. bottle opener on the strap.

current version of my bag - i take that everywhere -- small enough for day to day commuting, perfect for weekend jaunt.

Yeah, assuming you're gonna have a laptop, I'd go with a nice backpack. If you have an REI near you, they usually have a pretty good selection of travel (not hiking) backpacks.

I really like it. Three smaller zip pockets (none of them are really small), plus two interior pockets for a laptop and/or tablet, and a large open space. Waterproof. Really, really like it.

I can't say enough great things about Hamptons Hybrid Messenger Backpack from BBP Bags. Has lasted forever, converatable, pockets upon pockets, and fits well.

AB, my backpack has one more built-in bottle opener than yours.

Jesus freaking fred. Backpack is fine, but for gods sake stop sending me 3-4 emails a day. I JUST bought one, why do you think I need to get another one two weeks later?

All I can say is that this never happens to me at KMart.

And as far as luggage goes, a plastic bag from a quality store will get you a long ways. Bonus: who would steal it, when there are all those fancy back-packs and expensive duffel-things laying around.

This is why I bought a black one. It goes with everything.

I was in need of a new backpack for work (something about using the backpack I started college with to go cover events was getting old now that I'm close to 30) and was inspired by this thread. I bought the Uptown.

I'm far more willing to accept gray going with everything than black. I will argue about this.

You mean your personal seasonal palette? Ever since I got my color analysis done I'm wearing just the right shade of khaki pants. Coordinated with the proper brown tone in a belt, and it's a smashing look.

Black doesn't go with navy. Gray does.

That said, whether my backpack matches is pretty low on a list of things that are pretty low on my list.

Late to the response here, Juan. But, my grandfather was born just outside of Ghent. My wife and I visited there 20 years ago. The old town is great, and a tour of the old castle is great (a dungeon!), and a couple great medieval churches if you're into that sort of thing. Lots of bars, no trouble finding some great Belgian beer.
