And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

I'll be alright, thanks guys. It's my wife who deserves credit for putting up with me. It helps so much with my moodiness, I think she's more ready for me to pass it than I am.

It's sunny!
So weird, it was 70 degrees on Sunday, then 4 days of 35 cm (a foot!) of snow and then on Sunday it'll be 70 again.

Fall is definitely coming. Temps are in the low 60s with some wind. It's outright chilly right now.

Nice and brisk for Florida this weekend. It got so cold here that my car told me that my tire pressure was low!

Was going to bitch about the cold here, but then I heard about what's going on in Buffalo:
http://www.buffalonews.com/city-region/ ... h-20141118
Three feet on the ground and heavy snow for another 24-36 hours. Predictions of seven feet in total.
Here's what a lake effect storm looks like just before it hits.

Re: The Weather
I drove from Albany to Cleveland last Saturday, and as you approached Buffalo on I-90, you could see all the lake effect clouds in the distance. It kind of looked like Mordor from a distance.

Re: The Weather
I had my first direct experience with lake-effect snow last year on a business trip. Indy to Chicago, left at 530AM knowing I would need some extra time. I finally crossed the state line on I-80/90 at 2:45 in the afternoon. I sat, and I mean parked, on the on-ramp to 80/90 for at least 3hours and 30 minutes. From there it was a steady move up a car length, sit for 3 minutes for the 17 minutes it took to get to the state line and a bit past. Beyond that was the nicest weather I had seen in weeks. I've never seen it snow that hard and accumulate that quickly. I was very lucky I had stopped 20 miles before the interchange for gas and a 32 ouncer of gatorade which ended up being used as a urinal.
It flatout frightened me. I thought I was going to have to sleep in my truck if things didn't improve.

The updated forecast for Western New York is HEAVY snow until late tomorrow night. Or maybe into Thursday!
One normal day and then temps in the high 40s with rain for the weekend. Flash floods ahoy!
My father has already called to see if I want his tickets for the Bills-Jets game this Sunday. No thanks...

I'm 15 miles north of this, we've got an inch and a half on the ground. They'll get over 5 feet in parts of the lake effect band. Sabres-Sharks is still on, though. Re: The Weather
The drastic differential in snowfall is what amazed me about lake effect snow. Numerous time my Mom called me worried about massive snow storms, and we wouldn't get a flake. News outside of greater Buffalo just reported "blizzard in Buffalo..." When I was in school, we had a storm dump 36 inches in 24 hours. I drove off campus, and just 1 mile away there was only 12 inches, a couple miles further, 1 inch.Diamond wrote: I'm 15 miles north of this, we've got an inch and a half on the ground. Re: The Weather
agreed - that pic is amazing but it's not quite accurate to say that's before it hits - that IS the storm hitting. My parents live in Snyder/Amherst and as of some point this afternoon they'd had about 3". My buddy a few miles south was looking at something over 50" and counting.
right on, Sabo: the time-lapse videos today are the best i've ever seen in trying to explain this.

Re: The Weather
I know it's hard for people who haven't experienced it to understand. My high school years we lived just east of the Lake Michigan lake effect belt. You'd have situations where a few miles away they'd have 18 inches of snow and we'd have nothing. This is one of the many reasons I didn't attend Western Michigan. The Sybian wrote:The drastic differential in snowfall is what amazed me about lake effect snow. This is a potential pain in the ass. Was planning on leaving NJ mid-afternoon Wednesday and heading south down 95. Waiting until tomorrow to decide if we really need to change our plans.

I'm due to pick up two cadets at West Point mid-day Wednesday, and deliver them to New Hampshire. My car has summer tires, and does not like ice/snow a bit.
