Better inside their zone and exiting: Flyers at full strength or St. Louis on the PK?

This sorry is just fucking heartbreaking. Kid was 22 and the people he had trusted and who had raised him took him to the woodshed. That's really fucking sick.

Plans for a new World Cup. Apparently there will be the 6 hockey nations plus two "all star" teams.

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/worl ... c-changes/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The parties discussing the revamped World Cup of Hockey are prepared to make some dramatic changes to the tournament format, Sportsnet has learned.

The eight-team event is now expected to include two all-star entries along with the top six hockey nations — Canada, U.S., Sweden, Finland, Russia and Czech Republic — when it returns in September 2016, according to multiple sources.

The first all-star team is expected to feature the best players from the remaining European countries: Slovakia, Switzerland, Latvia, Germany and Slovenia, among them.

The makeup of the other mixed squad is still to be determined, although one idea being considered is bringing together all of the top young stars in the sport.

Organizers looked at staging a pre-tournament qualifier to determine the final two spots, but don’t believe there is time to pull everything together. They also like the idea of doing something different than the World Cups and Canada Cups of the past and think that adding all-star teams will make for a more competitive event.

I would not be surprised when the NHL announces an official format of a World Cup it will be followed by an official announcement that they are pulling out of the Olylmpics.

If so, the NHL have done a full 180. They ditched the World Cup to go to an Asian Olympics and now they are ditching an Asian Olympics to resurrect the World Cup.

Pulling from the Olympics could not be a dumber move for the NHL.

I feel like you guys should list Coach names with their all-time records when referencing a team from now on. Like, Joe Schmoe just ran his career record to 400-2,678 with the sabres. Just a suggestion.

Going to the Olympics was originally a really dumb move. Mostly because the World Cup was the NHLs own money maker and going to the Olympics is the IOC's money maker.

But once they have been there for 5 Olympics, pulling from the Olympics would be an even dumber move.

That's some crazy stuff. Loans at those interest rates are akin to flushing money down the toilet. He probably would have gotten better interest rates if he'd borrowed money from the Sopranos.

I think Todd McLellan is now 399-276-1 with the Sharks. Or something like that.

I could give a shit about who makes the money, what the Olympics do that a World Cup will never do is get people who don't typically care about the sport to give it a chance. More new viewers/interest = better things for the NHL

Safe assumption that legit lenders turned them down so they went this route?

Not only that, but it sounds like a lot of these loans were made before his first big NHL contract which would have co-incided with the financial meltdown so banks weren't lending money to much of anyone for any reasons, especially loans against theoretical future earnings.

I'm not sure how much viewing there is for the Olympics. It's usually in a really weird timezone with teams that are just patched up together. Vancouver was fun but the Sochi tournament was pretty forgettable. And if there is a spike of people who watch Olympic hockey, they don't turn into NHL fans. It's like people watching Olympic curling or swimming.

A World Cup is in North America every time, is played in the fall, and has a training camp and exhibition games.

A World Cup done properly since 1996 would have been huge. Even the 2004 tournament seemed made up after an 8 year gap. But to now leave the Olympics and go back to the drawing board is really dumb.

I disagree. For the vast majority of North Americans, curling and swimming are not something you can turn on a major sports network and see every night. I got a buddy of mine hooked on NHL hockey after watching oms of the Vancouver games.

That's awesome. I agree with you that the NHL pulling out of the Olympics now would be idiotic.

I was thinking more of the soccer model. Americans have taken to soccer over the last 20 years due to people watching the World Cup and then branching off into EPL or MLS. They did not need to see soccer in the Olympics in order to be fans. Alternatively, if they had seen the best soccer in the Olympics and there was no World Cup, it would be stupid for soccer to then leave the Olympics.

I don't know what is happening... My hockey team is still on top of the league... I don't understand how this is happening. I cheer for losers. I started watching the Canadiens in '94, a year after they won the cup and took a nose dive to the bottom of the league. (before that i was a boston bruins/cam neely fan), and I cheer for the Vikings in the NFL and West Ham United in the EPL. I've never witnessed a team I cheer for win anything. Closest i came is when Brett Favre fucked up in that game against New Orleans. Minnesota was the best team that year. hands down. They would have smoked Indy. Oh, and they had a few great seasons with moss, carter and smith. but always dissapointed in the playoffs. The Montreal Canadiens have made the final four twice in the last 5 years but they blow it every time.

Anyway, I'm not saying Montreal will win the cup this year, just that I'm enjoying seeing a team that I support sitting on top of the standings instead of somewhere closer to the bottom.

Flames are worse. Since their Stanley Cup victory in 1989 they have made the playoffs only 11 out of 24 seasons and have gotten out of the first round ONCE that was the cup run in 04. Think about that. Losing in the first round 10 times.

And they have 1 division title (06) since 89.

So we're in the same boat! Having a fun season!

There are 9 teams at either 33 or 34 points for the NHL lead (lead is obviously 34). Not sure whether that's parity or mediocrity.

As someone who produces girls, I'm really glad to see the way Mooney then Lepore and soon Dater are getting dealt with.

I've always enjoyed reading Dater's stuff, but I apparently missed this story. Details?

Devils rolled out a Gomez (an old 34), Elias (38), Jagr (a young 42) line last night.

Dater now also fired. As an explanation of sorts, he posted this:

I have a nightmare that NY misses the playoffs on the last day then wins the 1:100 shot at the lottery.

Just checked, and the Lightning have extra picks in the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 6th, and two in the 7th round of next year's draft, while not having their 2nd round pick b/c they resigned Callahan, and not having their own 7th round pick.

What's the hockey equivalent of Herschel Walker?

Walker might be the NFL equivalent of Lindros.
