I guess when you break it down into simple terms, a slut is a synonym for whore/prostitute. A whore/prostitute fucks men for money. They dress in a very provocative way. And if you are unaware use Google or visit a Red Light District. The girls aren't dressed is business casual attire there. If they were, it wouldn't be taboo to take pictures of them despite them being in public. (I'm using Amsterdam as an example here.)

So the whole premise of the video falls flat to me. In reality, I wholeheartedly don't give a shit. I like looking at women and if it's slutty, I'm cool with it. If it's more conservative, I'm cool with it too.

But the idea that a girl wearing sexy clothes means she wants to get fucked is lacking in accuracy and ethics. It's an idea that's often used to shame and devalue young girls, typically administered in some sort of conservative religious fashion. In even more extreme cases, it's an idea used to place the blame on the victims in rape cases. We need to stop that.

I agree with that completely. It's toxic and horrible.

But what I'm talking about is the literal here. If you want a definition of a slut and then make your case such word doesn't exist, it makes my brain hurt. In no way shape or form does dressing sexy mean that it's bad or make a statement of intent that you want dick. But there are women who do dress as 'sluts' and their entire intent is to 'get fucked.' Imagining it doesn't exist won't make the reality dissolve. So to compare what you're wearing in direct contrast to a slut can happen. It's the intent thing that needs to go away. However, that is based totally in perception to a viewer and perceptions are typically wrong.

I don't think the word "slut" has anything to do with getting paid for sex. It just means a promiscuous woman.

I think there are two problems with the whole "dressing like a slut" thing. One is, as Jerloma mentioned, that you can't fairly judge intent by the clothes someone wears (in most cases).

The other is simply the whole idea that a woman who enjoys sex is a "slut" and a bad person. Why is it cool for dudes - hell, it's just assumed for guys - yet terrible and evil for women? That's the part of the equation that bothers me the most. Take this negative, puritanical connotation away and the issue with clothes becomes irrelevant.

Now excuse while I go burn my bra.

Disagree - this is nonsense. But well produced.

Hate to be pedantic, but something about this video really irritated me.

My first reaction was that as a PSA - the video was complete crap. Interesting column in the paper here yesterday where the writer mentioned what a waste of money anti-drug PSAs are. Kids laugh at them (I know we did way back when), doctors say they don't work and yet the governments feel the need to keep producing them.

Then I saw this Australian one and thought that a) it was beyond over the top in making its point, b) it just sucks - a blatant rip off of the anti land mine PSA of a decade ago or so and c) can'r understand how a governmental organization would have paid for it.

Well, they didn't. From slate

Henry Inglis and Aaron McCann are a filmmaking duo from Perth with a history of producing unsettling advertisements. They also happen to be comedians, if you didn’t get that “Set Yourself Free” was meant to be funny. McCann characterized their style as “violent with a WTF factor” when we spoke yesterday: “Two comedians can’t really do ‘normal’ and ‘safe’,” he said. He was cagey as to whether or not "Set Yourself Free" is an elaborate prank. The commercial was always intended to be educational, he said, though “in terms of the Foundation, we’d like to leave it open to interpretation. [It’s] hard to keep intrigue in the internet age.” It’s probably a good bet to assume that Inglis and McCann invented the Foundation for the sake of the joke
