Even if you're not a George Jones fan, everyone should read his autobiography. (I Lived To Tell It All.) There are some crazy stories in there like him being wasted out of his mind and trying to rip Porter Wagoner's dick off. To do as much booze and drugs as he did and to live to 81 is incredible.

That was the best era. What passes for "Country Music" today is neither country nor music.

Certainly Willie Nelson belongs. Because he is such a cross-over figure (non-country fans, movies), and gained that general popularity relatively early, I tend to hold that broad appeal against him. Not exactly fair I suppose.

Peter Gammons retweeted someone who called George Jones one of the smoothest (or something like that) ever and he said "Emmylou, LL and (can't remember the third name) are better". He is either a huge dick or he just didn't realize George Jones had passed away. If it's the former, I hope when he dies someone points out any combination of sportswriters that were better at their craft than Gammons was.

Just for s&g I looked that up, and I think you misinterpreted his tweet:

I read that as "not even today's best are better".

See I interpreted it the same way as Giff. Though it doesn't sound like he realize he died. "Today's best" would imply he's comparing him to people still alive. It's a confusing fucking tweet all the way around.
