I can't remember. But I do remember the first CDs I bought, each in 1983:

2)
The latter was one of the first truly digital (DDD) recordings released.

I really don't remember. If it was my own money, it was probably something much more embarrassing than Styx.
Sticking with my theme today, I do know that my initial versions of the Led Zeppelin catalog were on cassette, painstakingly transferred from my Dad's LPs.

Re: What was the first album you ever bought?
I had every Zeppelin album on vinyl. Right up to Coda. Although when I purchased Houses Of The Holy, my parents frowned upon the album cover. One thing about Zep, they didn't hide it. Imagine the storm that would occur today if that album cover came out? Yikes.
Y'know, the one I played the least was The Song Remains the Same. That album one side two of half-hour indulgence was just, well, too fucking long.
One thing I never understood was that Stairway To Heaven, which I can't fucking stand, was played as the last waltz at every high school dance. Brother Jake Edwards started that; oddly he's on the air out here now, and he began that terrible tradition back at Sydney Academy in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The last half, or so, of Stairway is pretty much hard rock, right? And there'd be a hundred people trying to waltz to it. And as we wind on down the road. Yeah, sure. Very romantic. And it's like, what, 120-beats per minute in the final throes? While Plant falsetto screams?

The first one I bought with my own money at a record store was this one, shortly thereafter:
I wore those albums out, on my mum's big old console hi-fi. I blew out the speakers, although she never pinned it on me.

I can remember an incident where my parents gave a friend a copy of Roger Waters' The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking as a birthday present, I guess without buying a copy for themselves. Shortly thereafter, the record label changed the cover to censor that ass:bfj wrote:Imagine if they tried to put out this cover today...
They still have a cool looking incense holder that they picked up at a flea market that they decided not to give to the same guy for a subsequent birthday on the off chance it was worth something. At least that's how I remember it. I probably was in 3rd or 4th grade at the time, which would have made them....I think younger than I am now. Fuck.

Moving Pictures was released in 81, and Nightfly was released in 82.
I bought a shitton of CDs in 83. Even took a job in the record store just for the discount.
ETA: '82 sounds about right for DVDs being available. I know it was 82/83 when I bought them because I was a freshman in HS and that's when I had that (miserable) job.

One of the reason we might mostly be listing classics is that CDs were kind of a luxury item. So I only bought CDs that I was positive I wanted forever. I'd get cassettes or cassingles or even albums of other stuff. Then along came Random House, and changed all of that.
My first CDs were gifts from my father:
One that I wanted desperately:
One that he wanted me to like:

Keep in my with the older guys, the Classic Rock albums were newly released popular records when they bought them. If it makes you feel better, I'll include my second (possibly third) album, as also bought whichever LL Cool J around the same time.Rams Fanny wrote:Amazing how everyone's first was a classic rock album...did you all bang the hottest girl in school the first time as well? I stand by this choice. I was 12. Records were not cheap, and my parents weren't buying. It was at least a year, maybe two until I bought my second. Mowed a bunch of lawns for this:

I got my first CD player my junior year of high school, so I bought my first CDs in 86 or 87. I remember thinking they were so expensive. I wanted something I thought would sound particularly cool in great digital sound, so I chose for this one:
Then, I noticed a used cd bin, and realized I could afford a second disc at that rate, so I bought this one:
I still have the U2 disc, but the Depeche Mode one was stolen somewhere along the way.

Re: What was the first album you ever bought? (NSFW, PUBE)
That's just it. Discs were expensive. They were something like $28 and, at that age, I couldn't afford much. Classical discs were often over $30. Jazz, too. And I also didn't want to spend the money for something I already had on vinyl or tape. I remember when the Led Zeppelin boxed set came out (the one with the crop circles on the cover) and not being able to afford it; it was somewhere around $100.Shirley wrote:I got my first CD player my junior year of high school, so I bought my first CDs in 86 or 87. Heck, when I bought my first CD player it was around $400 and I recall thinking which disc I could get. Not which discs, which one.
The second CD I ever bought was The Joshua Tree, pictured above. But didn't everybody buy that one at the time? I remember Brothers In Arms being huge back then as well. There also wan't a helluva lot of choice at the time.

I remember CDs being around $18 in the states, which seemed like a lot. I think records were still around $8-10 or so?

Re: What was the first album you ever bought? (NSFW, PUBE)
The exchange rate was not on par; at the time the Canadian dollar was worth around US $0.60. That probably accounts for the discrepancy (which is effectively the same price). Plus there was about 18% tax on that.
Yes, albums were just about half the price of CDs back then. Plus used record stores were easily found where you could get albums dirt cheap.
