NHL Playoff Pool Challenge

Post by travzilla »

Returning after a 1 year absence, the Swamp NHL playoff challenge is back!

In an effort to eventually sell this thing to ESPN and retire rich, there is now an official pool website!
http://travischambers.wix.com/playoffpool

How it works:

- Players are divided into 8 groups based on points-per-game stats from the regular season. Each group has a progressively higher value for what goals and assists are worth for players from that group. Like a handicap, to even out the value between a superstar and a 3rd liner.

-Teams are in group 9. Teams earn points for winning a series. Divisional 1st and 2nd place teams earn 4 points per series win, 3rd and 4th place teams earn 6 points per series win. (Spread narrowed from previous years due to parity).

-Select a roster of any 12 players (can be from any group), with a maximum of 3 players from any 1 team.
-Select 1 team (not part of your 3-per-team max).

Submit roster to me via the form on the website or through PM here.

Scoring:
Goals and assists are wort 1 point each x the multiplier from their group.
NEW - OT goals count double.

Pick-ups:
NEW - assuming I can work it out in the spreadsheet, this year you can add players to your roster throughout the playoffs. You get 1 pick-up for every 5 eliminated players you have. (Still always having a max of 3 players for any one team).
Pickups can be made by PM or using the form on the website.

If the website isn't working, here are the groups:

Usually there have been about 12-15 swampers enter. If we want to make it a bit larger feel free to send the link to friends or whatever. I might see if some of my buddies want in.

This thread is my 'Pacino in Godfather 3' moment: just when I'm ready to go on another Swamp sabbatical, Trav posts the playoff pool. You're the best, Trav.

Trav you are the BEST! Glad I put out the Trav Light (Sort of a Batman light...but maybe a goal light..this is hockey). For that reason I won't complain about not having the X20 Joel Ward option.

Is there a reason that Kopitar is on 1.25 list I'm missing? Did he get traded from the Kings? You will have my picks (guesses) shortly...

He's that good. Still will probably out-score most of the Preds. (not sure how he slipped in there).

Picks received.

I almost picked him since I've had him on my roster (almost?) every year.

this is impossible. honestly i could see a fair case made for...all 16? teams to win. or lose in the first round.

there are no upsets.

Yeah, I thought it was risky to pick a couple of Senators, but virtually every player is a risk. (And I felt a pang of guilt for constructing a Penguin-free roster.)

Except NYR losing in the first round. I just don't see that happening.

I was going to pick him, too. Slovenia represent!
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Finally got rosters loaded and spreadsheet linked.

Standings after day 1 are here: http://travischambers.wix.com/playoffpo ... dings/cipy

My goal is to update either late at night after the games have ended, or the next morning. Standings, rosters, and player stats show total points and previous days points.

Rosters page is a bit of a mess but there weren't really any formatting options.

I'll but this thread for comments and to put the standings link up every few days.

Reminder - new this year, for every 5 eliminated players you have, you can add 1 new one (assuming I can work out the formulas).

Obviously. I'll need to see video evidence to believe otherwise.

By my count, five of us have Mark Stone on our rosters. Thanks, Subban!

Hey, Trav. Shattenkirk had two assists and Tarasenko had one last night. But, I don't think you credited me for them on your scoresheet.

Fixed it. Looks like I forgot to update Blues players last night, so anyone with one of them probably got a bump.

Will update today's games after VAN-CGY is done.

First Round (almost) done.

Made a few minor scoring adjustments today for players that had scoring plays changed after the game, or were inputed wrong. Current standings are:
  • Stick Magnets (guy from Trav's real-life hockey pool)
    The Walking Red (Steve)
    Cerrano
    Sancarlos' Kids
    Schruce Boobottom (Ryan)
    Shitpissville Mothers of Pearl (sloz)
    Degenerasian-X
    Morristown Express (Spinner)
    Travzilla
    Bensell
    wlu-lax
    Bapo
    BSF's 5-star-5-hole-5th-place-picks
    Double Stuf Fudgeeos (MaxW)
    Goon Squad (nate)
    Canadian Rass
    Sabo's Skate Sharpeners
    Droopdogs (Trav's cousin)
    Chedda
    Crease Creatures (?)
Once you have 8 or fewer players remaining, you are eligible to add someone new (not their already-gained points however). PM me or use the PICKUP form on the site.

Just wanted to give some love to this line.

Thanks again for running this, Trav. Your site has been added to my daily rotation, even tho I am firmly mid-table. I am the West Ham of hockey playoff pools. Which I guess means that I still get to date models, but not, like, supermodels.

When I look at my team, I'm shocked that the guy who has played the most games so far has provided me the fewest points, and especially that he is Steven Stamkos!
