With DirecTV sports pack (all the regional cable networks not part of Comcast), I used to get all but one or two Syracuse games a season while living in LA for about $12 a month.

Excellent idea, though I would change its format to a blog about a discerning middle-aged gentleman forced to temporarily leave his family and move across the country in pursuit of his dreams of long jump glory.

Congratulations, Dave. But yes, a big step.

Luckily there are a lot of law schools in the Seattle area.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Damn, that sounds like Pulitzer territory. I like it.

Steve, actually there aren't a lot of law schools in Seattle - only 2. We have 4 in the Triangle and a couple more in the Triad (Greensboro). Luckily my wife isn't planning on teaching out there. The plan for now - and this is a big reason why I want to do it - is that she won't work. She'll write books instead.

That is awesome. Incredible science, chilling scenario.

I lived for a few years quite near the San Andreas fault. Around Bolinas it was so obvious in the geography that it was a natural feature. I experienced one quake high up in an office building at night, where the file cabinets shook ominously and the windows did funny things with the reflections from the emergency lights. But this article made me more afraid than those experiences. And none too happy that my oldest daughter is going to move to the fault area this fall.

Coming from someone who was in the upper deck at Candlestick during the last big San Andreas event, relax. You're more likely to slip in the bathroom, crack your head open and die.
Who knows? Maybe, you were kidnapped, tied up, taken away and held for ransom.

I bet you'll never set foot in Candlestick again either. (Maybe in the shopping mall they build on the site.)

If she's in the law biz, just buy a house that's safely inland, and set up shop to prepare to reap the bounty that will come from the massive class action lawsuits.

The New Yorker is certainly behind the times on graphics, IMO. They have some great photography and drawings, but they rarely have anything like you are suggesting, and I think it's a function of them wanting to be more wordsy than anything else.

I was there at the game, too!

Funny thing, it is a law that insurance companies here offer earthquake insurance. But, the premiums are so punitive that nobody buys it.

Rerun, if your wife is worried about earthquakes, make sure your new home is on bedrock, rather than reclaimed land. The difference in effect was plain to see back in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake Howard mentioned.

Funny. I literally just sat back down after having that exact conversation with my (former) boss. I don't think there's nearly as much of that sort of land in the around Redmond.

BTW, that Shirley/Frazier pic was awesome. I never liked that show though.

Key words: soil liquefaction.

I pretty much took solid ground to be solid ground. Whether it was in the Back Bay in Boston, in the lowlands in the Netherlands, or in the San Francisco Bay area. But what shaking can do to soil that is not 'original' is mind-boggling.

Prolonged saturation and considerable pressure can do the same thing. Witness the dams that have broken in the hollers and elsewhere in the Appalachians, in many cases associated with coal mining. And not only there. Most dams are a lot less sturdy than they appear. More intense rain events due to climate change is going to stress-test dams all around the globe. Many will fail the test, with tragic results.

The author of the New Yorker piece wrote a follow-up because of the huge amount of attention her article received. This one is about how NOT to die with the Pacific Northwest shakes and slides into the ocean. It's a nice balm to the panic caused by the other article.

I fly out to Seattle tomorrow. I cleaned out my office today. Kind of depressing. I'll still be back a week or two per month, so I kept my computer stuff, but I packed up all of my personal shit. Kind of made it seem real.

I'm going to miss my kids.

Best of luck! It'll be hard, but it's the best thing for you and your family in the long run. If you keep that back of mind, you'll be fine.

(Also, might as well enjoy life as a pseudo-bachelor for a little while. That'll never happen again.)

Thanks, Dave (and everyone else). I have temporary housing for now. A nice-looking apartment in Bellevue. Once I get settled in, I'll start to look for an apartment.

I do still have your info, so thanks. Again, once I'm out there and somewhat settled with everything, I'll give you a shout and we can get a beer or something.

I'm here now. Got in last night. The two times I visited Seattle before, both this spring, it was bright and sunny. Beautiful.

Now that I'm committed and moved, I show up in August and it's 65 degrees and raining. Welcome!

I'm about to head out to pick up my Indian pizza. Butter chicken pizza. Never heard of such a thing before, but it sounds pretty awesome.
