Answer
Monday July 6, 2015
Category: THE OSCARS
Clue: "GLADIATOR" IS CLOSE, BUT THIS FILM HAS THE EARLIEST HISTORICAL SETTING OF ANY BEST PICTURE OSCAR WINNER

Answer:
What is Ben-Hur?

The Ten Commandments came to mind, but it did not win the Best Picture Oscar. And was set something like 1400 years earlier than Gladiator

And Lord of the Rings is set on a fictional time line, which does not (did not) exist.

My wrong answer (The Miss Universe Pageant) had zero rational backing, I bet hers did too.

(Penny Pritzker was involved in some really shady banking stuff leading up to 2008, but rather than being held accountable, she was rewarded with Commerce Secretary.)

And about the Lord of the Rings, there's a sporcle quiz where you have to name the Best Picture winner by setting and time frame, and they put RotK as the earliest Best Picture. Isn't it pretty much decided that Middle Earth is in fact Earth? Doc, you argue that it's a fictional timeline, but would Clash of the Titans fall into the same thinking? They're both myths of current Earth.

Like I said, it's arguable.

This was briefly discussed on the Jboard site. I gave it very little thought, and I am glad you scored the answer as ruled by the tv show, because it is arguable. I've never seen Clash of the Titans, but that features Greek mythology gods and characters, and the Greeks considered those figures real, I'd hate to place a timeline on those folks and events, compared to biblical events. While you can argue that Moses and the Ten Commandments are no more or less mythical than these other stories, and while Jesus makes a brief appearance in Ben-Hur, the Roman Empire is a clear, unambiguous historic reality. I guess, I don't fucking know, I'm glad I did not have to rule on this, although since you are ahead of me I probably would've ruled against you because I want to win.
